There she was, my secret paramour, my unrequited love, O Siren - puller of mine heartstrings...and she did not know I existed. So many times I had attempted to warrant her attention, but I always, always glanced away before meeting her cerulean eye. This cur-sed shyness! If only she knew. Did she ever wonder? Oh, how I knew her, how we knew each other so intimately. Would I tell her, finally? Would she be pleased? Horrified? Disappointed?

"Bea, that weird chick is looking at you again"
"Would you stop? You have some form of obsession and it really needs to end, like, yesterday."
"I'm telling you..."
I shot a glare at my soon-to-be-considered-former-bestie daring her to continue before glancing at the girl she had been referring to. I wish I could say she was unremarkable, but that would be a lie. Those cascading waves of pale cotton candy pink hair, ridiculously long pale lashes, curves any woman would envy - and she always had flowers in her hair. Every day a different type, a different color. I wondered why she wouldn't catch my eye? Technically I was considered popular while she walked with the outcasts...which should of made it easy for me to approach her. Why did I hesitate? Was it because I still felt some ridiculous loyalty to my mysterious pen pal, my closest yet most anonymous confidant?

If not today...then when? Was I to forever pine from the sidelines? Why was I so eloquent in my letters and yet I couldn't make my mouth form the words I wanted to say? Oh, how I wanted to trace those lips with my fingertips, curl my hand around hers and see if they were a perfect fit, lay my head upon her shoulder and breathe her in. My heart felt like it caged a thousand butterflies, wings fluttering against the bars, desperate for release. I delicately touched the primrose in my hair - for courage - yet I found it impossible to take those few steps that separated us. They yawned like a chasm. O rejection, how you make fools of us all, unwilling to take risks!

Curiosity overtook my hesitation. I walked up and introduced myself; "Hi, I'm Bea"
She smiley shyly and said softly; "Yes, you are. You're my little honeybee."
My heart jumped into my throat. Surely she couldn't mean? But there was only one other person who called me by that sobriquet.
"Sage?" I asked hesitantly, daring to hope.
Those letters we wrote to each other, did she know they were my only comfort during the long, lonely nights?
"My pseudonym, yes. My name is Poppy" I replied hesitantly, daring to hope.

Time seemed to stand still as we looked into each other's eyes, after all this time, and although the weather was mild that day it felt like we were surrounded by a maelstrom of emotion...

"I think I love you," we whispered in tandem.
