Adventure. The word was used so often in his life, it almost sounded boring. It was comparable to the lengthy dossiers he had to read, or a particular uninteresting briefing- though at this point in his career, there were precious few things that still interested him. Been there, done that, you know?
If there were ever to be a brochure advertising his line of work, ‘adventure’ would be left, right and center on it. ‘Adventure’, ‘possibly illegal skills’ and ‘extremely dangerous’ - they’d be the main selling points for an undercover life. And kids would still sign up. Just like he had. And yes, he’d been hungry for some fun, but that wasn’t the main reason he joined the intelligence force. Really, he just wanted to be the best at everything- and spies were exactly that.
He’d seen quite a few recruits like him in the force. Determined and steady, those kids were the ones that always topped their training classes, always stayed up late to check and recheck information, always tried their hardest at anything new the bureau threw at them. He felt proud, like a mama bird, watching the recruits from afar. More people like him in the world could only be a good thing.
As much as he loved the little Troys, he had to admit that they weren’t the biggest group. That title would go to a pretty different group – the curious ones. The ones who wanted to walk a different path from everyone else just to see what they’d find along the way. The ones who’d also sweat and toil and stay up late, but not to be the best- simply to see where they could go. To be honest, he didn’t completely understand those types of people; who would not have perfection as their main goal?
Maybe if he spent a little physical time with those recruits, he’d empathize with them better. That was actually something he’d never done before. But even though it was a new experience, the idea of hanging around people who didn’t understand half the things around them had never really appealed to him.
And even if he was done with adventuring, even if his curiosity was pretty much dead, he had better things to do.
