"Mommy, look! There’s a wizard! At my birthday!" An excited young kit bounced up and down excitedly, as a grey and blue kalon walked into the front yard, his black cloak almost floating with every step he took. The kit’s mother smiled knowingly, and winked at the wizard kalon.
The rest of the party guests turned to look at the mysterious figure.
Without a word, the kalon put a hand into his satchel, revealing a small sack. He deftly untied it, and pulled out a chunk of lead ore. He then drew his wand and muttered something, pointing it at the gray lump. With one turn of his hand, the lump disappeared, and he held a small pile of shimmering gold coins! The kits, rendered speechless, stood silently as the wizard deposited one gold coin each in their paws.
One kit, the birthday girl herself, finally spoke. "How did you do that?"
"Well," the wizard explained, "I’ve learned everything I know from this book. He opened his satchel and grabbed a heavy book. It was a dusty brown, with a gold-embossed title that seemed to shine as much as ever.
"Wow, Mr. Wizard! May we look inside?" All of the kits crowded around him, and any surprise that resulted from the gold coins was long gone.
"You may call me Tariq," the kalon smiled, as he opened the book to the first yellowed page, what appeared to be an introduction.
"Young wizards," he read aloud, "This is just the beginning of your journey. I can guarantee your curiosity will take you far. After all, it is likely how you found this book. Wizardry teaches us that we all have a magic deep inside of us, but it is up to us to channel it. Though this is aided by technology such as wands, ultimately it is shaped by practice. And that is what you will find in this humble book. But most importantly, what wizardry teaches us is that we must use our powers for good. Whatever powers are bestowed upon us have the possibility to be used in two ways. Think about them both, and choose wisely. For your life will be enriched by doing so."
Tariq shut the book, earning him a collective sigh from all the kits that hung onto his every word.
Thankfully, he knew what he was doing. "Who wants to play a game?"
The little kits cheered, and whispered excitedly amongst themselves.
"Alright, everyone! I’m going to set my hat right here. You each get two turns to throw the rings on it, and if they land, you get a point! Whoever wins gets these precious gems." Tariq held out his paws, and three large gemstones glittered in the afternoon sun.
Without even being told, all the kits lined up, and each patiently waited for their turn as the birthday girl went first. The first ring missed by about a foot, but the second one sailed through the air and sunk right over the hat.
As the game progressed, Tariq watched carefully by the sidelines, his eyes tracking each ring as they traveled to the hat. However, only the most observant kalon would notice that he seemed to guide the rings with his eyes. But maybe it was just their imagination.
Before the kits knew it, it was the last round, and the score was tied between the birthday kit and her best friend. The birthday kit went first, and she landed one of the rings!
Then, her friend gave it a shot, and both rings landed perfectly over the hat.
"Good game, Alex," the birthday girl said, truly happy for her friend, but she looked a little disappointed.
Tariq smiled, and handed Alex the prize. "I enjoyed watching everyone play. But now I must go."
"No, Tariq! Please don’t go!" Alex cried.
"I have to," Tariq said sadly, "But I’m sure that you all will continue to have fun without me." And with that, he turned and left for his car, his brown satchel swinging as he walked away.
One by one, the kits went back to playing in the bounce house, until only Alex and the birthday kit were left. "Nadia, I want you to have these." They held out two of the gems that Tariq had given them, only now he was nothing more than a distant, magical memory.
Nadia accepted the gems and the pair hugged, then they went to stash their goodies, skipping away. Tariq watched from his car. Perhaps I did make an impact on them, after all. He smiled, and drove off to his next gig.
