Rowan knew that he was forbidden from crossing the street on his own. He was usually perfectly at peace with that, and didn't set foot on the path the cars took without his humans guiding him. There was only one time he broke this rule, and it would affect his life for many years to come.
The day seemed like any other spring day as Rowan rolled around in his yard. He'd just gotten hold of his favorite tug rope when he heard a peculiar sound come from the street. His ears perked, Rowan swiveled towards the direction it came from to investigate, and instantly he was on his feet, blood buzzing with the need to act.
A small kitten, not even old enough to leave its mother, was crouching in the road with a car headed its way!
Rowan pushed his legs as fast as they could go straight towards the tiny scrap of fur, scooping it up in his mouth firmly enough to hold it without hurting it, the sound of an aggravated car horn following him to the other side of the road.
He could hear his humans' startled voices from the other side of the street as he looked over his tiny charge. The kitten looked up at him with wide eyes and fluffed fur, seemingly stunned by the event. Rowan carefully nosed the small creature to check for injuries, and was immensely relieved to find none. He gave the kitten a lick for good measure, prompting a squeaky little pur from the small thing.
His humans had finally reached them, and their stern words stumbled to a halt as they realized the scrap of fur in Rowan's care.
That eventful first meeting was how Rowan met the second furry member of his family, Sparrow. Rowan still knows not to go into the road, but he definitely doesn't regret the time he broke this very important rule to rescue the cat that would become such a big part of his life. He'd definitely do it again if he needed to (though don't tell Rowan's humans that)
