Child Collie: Daisuki
Prompt:

Everything they did seemed to be wrong. They knew their mother was busy, having so many pups wasn't an easy feat they were sure, but that didn't make it hurt any less.

    *

Daisuki remembers the burn of muscles as they worked hard to pull themselves to the top of a rock mound, determined to prove to their siblings they could do it. While it was only as high as a human, their little legs meant it was harder than expected. They were half way now, and excitement tingled through their fur at the idea of making it. Grinning below to show their siblings they weren't afraid, they were met with a disapproving stare. "Look mum, I've almost made it to the top!"

"Get down from there right now, you're gonna fall and hurt yourself!"

Excitement draining, the young pup began to climb down, suddenly wary of the drop.

    *

As the other collie flashed a water smile and began walking away, Daisuki's heart felt ready to burst. The younger pup has stepped on a thorn, and they were at the far end of the compound, too far for his parents to hear his call. They recalled the time their own mother had removed a thorn from their pad, swift and no nonsense, before giving it a lick and sending them on their way.

"I can help you with that," they told the young pup, who in turn held out their paw. "Now this might sting just for a second but then it'll feel all better," they reassured brightly. Leaning forward, they used their tongue to locate the thorn, then grasped the base with their teeth before giving it a quick tug. The other pup let out a yelp, but Daisuki quickly nuzzled the top of his head. "Well done, you were so brave! It should be better enough you can go find your parents," they reassured, and lit up at the gratitude in his eyes.

"Mum!" They called the next time they saw her. She was untangling burrs from one of her brother's pelt and gave Daisuki a distracted greeting. "I just helped someone! It was great, I want to help others forever!"

"That's nice," she replied with a quick smile, "But that's not a proper job, make sure you don't let it interfere with whatever you next owner wants you to train in."

"Uh, sure," they agreed half heartedly, the good feeling suddenly soured a little.

    *

Seeing pups go to their new homes was nothing new, but this time it was their turn. They'd seen some parents say goodbye, tears in their eyes and wishing they'd see each other again soon. But Dekiru simply smiled, pride in her eyes. "This is it, your first steps into being an adult, have fun!"

It was nice to know she had faith in them, and trusted they were ready for this and it was the right thing. But they couldn't help wishing their was some sadness there too.

Daisuki's new home was okay. They were a nice family with a young child, and the fluffy collie loved getting to know them all and playing, but it felt like something was missing. A feeling of unsettled guilt sat heavy in their chest, and they recalled their mother's instructions to work hard, but there didn't seem to be any sort of job around here, just lazing about and eating treats and the daily walk with no real goal. It was... nice. But Daisuki felt tired instead of relaxed.

    *

CreekShadow Kennel was everything their previous homes weren't. There were so many collies they got the feeling they'd never be bored, and they'd heard talk about agility and herding training. As they were given a tour and shown around, they noticed how different every collie was. Some fixed Daisuki with a cold gaze that made them shiver, but others wanted to know everything about them, the full attention something almost foreign.

    Suddenly they felt seen.

They'd clear a jump in training and turn around to find a collie or two barking praise. They'd offer their assistance to someone and be flashed grateful looks from more than just the collie they helped.

It finally felt they were becoming who they were meant to be. Even if that hollow space in their heart remained. It didn't matter what their mother would say, this was their life, right?

    *

This was Daisuki's first agility show, and their nerves were alight from the tips of their ears to their tail. The age old doubts flashed through their mind. What if I fail? Is this a good enough thing to even be doing? Paws shaking, they stepped up to the starting point, trying to dispel the darkness creeping into their vision and filling their ears.

A bark split through the fog. A voice they recognised instantly. Eyes flashing to the crowd, they saw her.

    "You can do it, Daisuki!"

Eyes bright with pride, their mother watched with her full attention, not a doubt in her being.

    Oh.

It felt like the universe shifted.

With the starting signal, Daisuki locked her attention onto her owner and the course at hand. They cleared it easily, heart racing with excitement and pride.

In the rush of announcements and ribbons, they didn't see their mother again, but that was okay.

    *

    "You're... You're here."

Dekiru gave a small chuckle. When she's been handed over to a new owner, she hadn't realised to was Daisuki's, but now here she was, facing one of her pups. Love was overflowing from her, but she did her best to contain it. "I'm here," she confirmed.

    Her pup looked conflicted.

    Dekiru's heart sank.

She smiled, saying she'd better let the owner's finish giving her a tour, but the whole time she watched her pup. Daisuki had a life of her own now. She watched as they flitted from one collie to the next, making friendly conversations or helping with odd jobs here and there.

That evening, after the pair had avoided each other for the majority of the day, Dekiru approached her pup. They smiled and welcomed her, but seemed hesitant, and Dekiru knew their was no point delaying what she needed to say.

    "I'm sorry."

Daisuki looked surprised, but their gaze cleared a little.

"I know I wasn't everything you needed when you were a pup. I'm so proud of who you've become, and I'd love to get to know the real you."

    Her pup smiled.

    "Thank you."

Child Collie: Mugi
Prompt: It took Kingfisher Crossing a while to actually track down Mugi's sire, and well, they weren't really surprised to learn just how troublesome Ryu is to his owners as well. Like father like son, eh? Mugi was separated from his mother after weaning, and never actually met Ryu as a pup. Their similarities, however, definitely prove they are related to each other on top of the genealogy paperwork. Both are fierce competitors, quickly picking up the subtleties of each opponent and using that to their advantage. Ryu's clear protective nature and dedication to the other dogs in the kennel illustrate that should these two meet again, that Mugi would be accepted under Ryu's wing as if all those years apart never happened.

      Child Collie: Nefelibata
Prompt: Ever since little Nefelibata was a young pup, Dionne has done everything in her power to stick by her daughter's side. Whether its going on long walks with each other or sitting next to the campfire on a cold night, these two girls are always together.

It's no surprise that, due to Nefelibata's unique look, other collies are uneasy when they first see her. While raising her daughter, Dionne always made sure to be Nefelibata's best friend. Other pups ignored her or called her names? Dionne was right there for a reassuring smile and cuddle. Human visitors made sly comments about Nefelibata's appearance? Dionne simply found the most unique looking toy in the toy-pile and watched her daughter play as a distraction.

To Dionne, her daughter is made of stars ― beautiful, unique, and always bringing a light to every situation no matter the darkness.

Child Collie: Cerastes
Prompt:
Cerastes was born to into an unlucky situation. She was one of a large litter. One littermate struggled to gain weight, another was born with a deformity. From day one, Cerastes struggled to get her needs met whether they were physical, like food, or emotional, like attention. As the litter aged, she stayed in the middle of the pack size-wise. She also had a quiet solemn demeanor. Due to both of these she was often overlooked. The largest and pushiest demanded attention. The smallest and weakest outwardly needed the most. So Cerastes didn't get what she needed. She often got pushed off a teat still hungry. She watched as her mother made sure the weakest were fed but because she wasn't the smallest or loudest, that didn't include her.
As the pups grew older and started to tumble about more, their needs grew to include things other than food- attention, guidance, exercise, enrichment. Her mom still didn't seem to have the time or energy for her. There was always a pup crying for food or attention or help. Cerastes craved affection so much it hurt. But her mom had too many things on her plate. She was never very motherly.

At first Cerastes tried to do impressive feats to gain her mom's attention and praise. She tried to be the first for everything. Despite her growling belly and trembling limbs, she pushed herself. First out of the box, first outside, first up the dirt mound. Her mom rarely noticed the achievements. Cerastes began to feel nothing she did would ever be good enough. One day her mom finally seemed to notice Cerastes being more mobile. It was one of the few times Cerastes can remember her mom speaking directly to her. Because she seemed capable and self-reliant, instead of praise, her mom asked her to help with her weaker siblings. She was supposed to eat less and help them more. With every lonely night, Cerastes grew more resentful while also feeling unworthy.

There were things going on around her that she didn't understand or take much notice of at the time. She wouldn't truly understand their situation until she was older and in a new home. And new home she found! Eventually the pups were sent to new homes. Cerastes was one of the first to go. She remembers looking back one last time, hoping for some word of love for her mom. Her heart broke as her mother didn't even look her way, too distracted by her rambunctious and needy siblings. As she turned forward again, Cerastes had one though how she noticed how ragged her mom looked.
Cerastes went from a home that already had several dogs. At thing point she was fed up of having to share space and resources with others so it didn't go well. Off to a shelter she went. Luckily from there, she was picked up by her current and forever home. It took a long time for her to be ok with other dogs in her space. She met other dogs and heard their stories. She learned much more about the world and different backgrounds. At first she didn't want to think of her puppyhood at all but overtime the memories began to emerge regardless. This time though she was able to look at them in a new light, with better understands, and with maturity.

She didn't know it at the time, but that first owner ran a puppy mill and her poor mom was bred, one litter after another, starting from a young age. This mill in particular specialized in "unique coats and mutations". Her mom was never given chance to recover and puppies were snatched away early. She learned to distance herself from the individuals to not feel as much pain. Truthfully, she was never able to fully distance herself. She felt the pain every time. Realistically though, even if she hadn't emotionally distanced herself from Cerastes, she still wouldn't have been able to meet the needs of all the pups due to the size of the litter, the complications with some of them, and her own neglect. She also was never full or well cared for. Looking back, Cerastes remembers feeling the soft fur covering boney ribs as she drank milk.
Cerastes has been able to process her past, with the help of some friends, and now understands the impossible situations her mom was in, it doesn't take away from how she was treated but she grew to have compassion both for her neglected puppy self and her mother who didn't have enough to give.

Cerastes learned there was to a new dog arriving on the ranch. She isn't normally one of the greeters s she kept her distance and went about her day. Later, one of her friends said she should check the newcomer out. She wasn't sure but she gave off something... Her firend didn't want Cerastes running into the new collie unprepared if want she suspected was correct. The next day, Cerastes saw the new collie from a distance. Something seemed a little familar. As she grew closer and the wind shifter, the collie's scent hit her. Cerastes froze as memories and emotions overwhelmed her. At this point the other collie had noticed her too. Her mom, mirrored her motion. Cerastes came back to herself but was unsure of how to proceed. Her mother seemed to be struggling similarly. If even, her mom seemed sad and submissive. Cerastes knew most collies would be overjoyed but she didn't have the same relationship as most.

Overtime, the two grew more comfortable. After talking the essentially decided to start over their relationship, like to strangers. It helped take off the pressure of expectations. Luhi explained her life and upbringing. She said she had noticed Cerastes as a pup. She thought if she guarded her heart against this incredible puppy, it wouldn't hurt as bad when she left. It didn't work and all she felt was regret at all the things unsaid.
It took a lot of time, conversation, and healing but the two collies now have a solid relationship. They enjoy each other's company and seek out the others advice. It might not be the usual relationship but it works for them.

Child Collie: Parvati
Prompt: Himavan was always a strict and harsh father. Don't take him bad, he cared for his little girl so much, but wanted to have her prepared for the real world. What's more, that cold figure always melted when the little Parvati ran towards him and licked his nose and cheek to welcome him after a hard day working in the title program or herding their own cattle. Himavan is not one to express his feelings, but he lost the opportunity to tell Parvati his feelings when she was sent to another kennel, and his only wish now is to meet with her again to tell him how proud he is of her, that she has turned into a great dog, the best daughter one father could ask for, and this is when he still doesn't know that she had pups so now he is grandfather!
