Kalon Name: Eros
Prompt:
Eros could feel the blood pumping in his veins. That alien thing in place of a heart, inciting panic in every fibre of his being. But that was how he knew he was on the right path. I have to keep going. Even if it kills me. Though the forest was vast and deep as the ocean, the beating of the drum would steer him true. He only needed to get there before it was too late.
The heart that was not his pounded in his chest, straining against its calcified restraints. Just a little further. I just need to find her and get it back. The knowledge of what she would likely ask of him made his stomach clench. There were far worse things one could give away. But this time, he was ready. He'd studied up on faerie lore. He knew all their ins and outs; all their tricks and weaknesses. And if he couldn't make her see reason... well, that's what the powdered cold iron stashed in his fur was for.
There, up ahead.
A circle.
The stranger inside him squirmed, trying with all its might to force itself from its cage of bone. But Eros held true. He gritted his jaw, hovering a trembling paw over the fungal barrier. The heart lurched, threatening to spill itself from his throat and paint the pretty green grass below. No. He swallowed his fear. His resolve was steel. Another paw planted itself in the circle. His vision clouded. He blinked. The third paw had crossed the border. Just. One. More. Step.
His blood was on fire. His head swam. Every movement felt as if a thousand tonnes of pressure were bearing down upon him. But he had to endure. Mustering every shred of strength he had left, he dragged his final paw through the mushrooms. Though the pain was nigh unbearable, his determination was unshakable. He rooted his paw into the soft earth, breathing a small sigh of relief.
As his eyes fluttered and his body gave out beneath its own weight, he couldn't help but smile. The world blurred and shifted around him, showing him colours he'd never seen before. I did it. I did the impossible. He'd found a portal to the Otherworld, and it had welcomed him. Just another step closer to reclaiming his stolen heart. The journey would be perilous; the cost unspeakable. But he had come this far. He wasn't about to let his past mistakes stop him again. I will get my heart back. So I can give myself the love I deserve.
