There was said to be a man named Hyacinthus, who was so beautiful he managed to get the attention of 2 gods. Apollo, god of the sun, music, and poetry, among other things, and Zephyrus, god of the west wind. Hyacinthus favored Apollo, and the two were a very happy couple. One day, Apollo was teaching Hyacinthus how to throw a discus (Ancient Frisbee). When Apollo threw the discus to Hyacinthus, Zephyrus, out of jealousy, threw the discus off course. It struck Hyacinthus in the head, killing him. Apollo, in his mourning, rushed over to his dead lover. In an attempt to immortalize Hyacinthus to a degree, Apollo created a flower, the Hyacinth. The Hyacinth remains one of Apollo's sacred plants, to honor Hyacinthus.

Serenity’s family has a long-standing tradition involving flowers and plants. When a new family member is born, the oldest relative picks a flower or plant that will represent them throughout their life. Serenity’s birth was anything but serene — the ewe arrived early and was extremely tiny.

Serenity’s great-grandfather, the eldest relative, would often visit the hospital to check on the tiny bundle of joy. He could often be heard talking to any nurse who had the misfortune of passing by Serenity’s unit. “That is my great-granddaughter in that room.” He would say, his voice hoarse with old age. “She is a real fighter — I can tell she is going to be a whipper snapper. She is goin’ to be a handful!”

During those early days, Serenity’s great-grandfather thought long and hard about what flower he would bestow upon the newest family member. He made his choice on the day Serenity came home. Many relatives would later claim that you could hear Serenity’s cries from miles away. She certainly always knew how to use her voice. “Serenity’s flower is going to be a snapdragon.”

Originally, everyone thought that the snapdragon was chosen due to its bright, cheery colors. It was difficult to not smile when given snapdragons, similar to how it was impossible to be upset in the presence of Serenity. Snapdragons come in almost every color imaginable. Although Serenity couldn’t change the color of her wool, she definitely had enough moods to go around.

One day, when she was a bit older, Serenity decided to ask her great-grandfather why he had chosen the snapdragon as her flower. He looked at her long and hard. “Have you really looked at a snapdragon, Serenity? The flower heads resemble the snout of a dragon. Dragons are fierce, strong, loyal, and tenacious.” There was a twinkle in his eye, which usually meant he was holding something back. When pressed by Serenity, he whispered, “With death comes new life.”

It was not until after his passing that Serenity came to know what he meant. A few days before his passing, her great-grandfather had gifted her a bouquet of snapdragons. Since she was busy for several days after his passing, Serenity neglected to discard the bouquet when the flowers began to die. When she arrived home, tired and sad, she found that the bouquet had completely transformed. Where there were once brightly colored flowers, there were now skull-shaped remains. Her great-grandfather’s voice echoed in her mind. “With death comes new life.”

Serenity learned an important lesson that day, all thanks to the snapdragon and her great-grandfather. When someone passes away, that does not mean that person is gone forever. They will continue to live on through the memories they shared with others, and through the passing down of stories from generation to generation. Serenity closed her eyes and looked up to the sky, tightly clutching the dead snapdragons. “Thank you, pop-pop. I understand now.”
