I wanted to pick a name based on the combo of markings here
I initially thought of mythological links between the sea and war and there are not many of those! The reticulated patterns look sort of like river valleys or ripples to me, which is what made me think fow water. Took a while looking for one, couldn't find any I liked.
Decided to swap to just looking for reptile based things that match and... Yeah, that was much easier.
The basilisk is a legendary snake (or later, bird) which could kill if you made eye contact, but also could spit out poison breath to instantly kill anyone who thought they were smart for closing their eyes.
Literally not being able to refrain from killing is very very thematic for the god Mars. Mínerva and Bellona are restrained or considered violence, and Mars is the needless death and destruction of war, so the basilisk is a nice match, with being incapable of not killing.
Basilisk and Basil share an etymology, coming from Basileus, meaning "king"

This was a bit of a tough one! I liked a few entries here, but ultimately this is the winner!
I like the thought process behind the name.
My net connection isn't cooperating with me right now, so I'll update the image later!
