prompt :: The bookshelf is an immense oaken presence in the small room, spanning the entire width and height of the far wall. Jam-packed with records of all sorts; bound books, notepads, scrolls, binders, and loose pieces of paper shoved cattywampus in any space they can fit. You can see bits of messy handwriting scrawled on some of the sheets, but the letters are so frantic you can’t make out a word of what they say. Adelaide, who led you in here to show you her collection, smiles sheepishly.
“We’ll, you meet so many interesting folks traveling from port to port, it’s kind of second nature to write their stories.” She perks up, trotting over to one particularly weather-stained sheet and carefully working it free from the hoard. “Oh, here’s a good one! I once met a fisherman who lost his left arm to a seagull! I don’t even know how that’s physically possible, but it sure was an interesting story!” She hands you the parchment, practically shoving it into your arms before heel-turning back to her shelf. “And here’s one from when I met an old lighthouse keeper who swears she met a bona-fied selkie, and even got to try on her seal coat!” She pauses with the notebook in her hand, looking expectantly at you.
“So…this is what you do on your boat?”
“Well, I’ve got all sorts of time to kill after I deliver the mail, so why not collect peoples’ stories? You never know what you’re gonna hear!”
