name: Junie
time they felt free:
Junie sat on the floor in his room, staring off into the distance and turning his head in all sorts of directions... the door, his desk... and the window. Whenever he looked at the window he quickly looked back away at the door or his desk again... This was a common occurrence for Junie. He loved the rain so much when he was younger, differing from storming to soft pitter-patters. He enjoyed it when the children were outside playing in the summer, and the faint whistle of the wind could be heard. Now he'd do anything to distract himself. Sighing again he looked at the door and noticed an envelope had been pushed through, and he stalked over slowly towards it. Slumping down again he opened it and read the letter. It was an acceptance letter to study at a school. He threw it into the trash, where others laid.
This one was too far; he couldn't move away from his area. Later that night, all he could think about was the letter. It plagued his dreams and he jolted awake at 1 am riddled with sweat. He looked towards the trash bin- but the letter was on his desk. Did he forget to toss it away again? He went to do the same until he eyed red ink. He touched it and it smudged slightly- this couldn't have been written too long ago, he wildly checked around his room for the culprit. Shaking his head, he read the words "We welcome you tonight to experience Oleander's School of Wonder." He chuckled and looked at the darkness in his room. Tonight?? He chuckled, but he stopped suddenly and began to think. Curiosity got the better of him and he opened his closet to grab his backpack... But instead found a long line of open winding steps leading outside his home, into the quiet street. Another letter laid on the steps, "Follow the birds."
Stepping down the staircase he heard the flapping and cawing of crows red in color, forming a pointed arrow flying East. His mother, who had really been quiet all day, knocked on his door and twisted the locked handle to ask what the racket was. But Junie didn't open the door, and Junie didn't answer. Junie raced down the block, paws hitting the asphalt, not thinking, just doing. Running at full speed away from everything he'd ever known, following what might just be some migratory birds...But he followed them, the envelope held in his mouth. He followed them to an empty field of grass, where they all stood in a circle. It was now 5 am, and the town was just starting to wake. Junie stepped into the circle hesitantly and felt the world shift around him, and the golden light in front of him. Junie was excited for the adventure that lay ahead and ran full force forwards.
Breathing in freely, for the first time in a while, the fresh scent of morning rain.
