It's hard though so they often end up searching for hope. They don't know exactly what form that hope will take, maybe it will be a new poster. Or maybe it will be a new friend. Perhaps hope is a night of quiet reflection under the starry sky. Maybe hope will come from an old song they forgot they loved so dearly. Hope could be a few glow in the dark star stickers decorating the roof of their bedroom. Sometimes hope might be playing a favorite video game while curled up under a soft blanket. Once hope was a little collection of fidget toys that make a merry little clicky-clack sound when they rolled them in their paws. Hope takes many forms and all of them are wonderful little sparks of joy that brighten up the darkest hours. They look for that flame of warmth where ever they go and often look to gift it to others who might be in similar need of a little spark of hope to press on. They sometimes even find hope just in the act of looking around at the world looking for little things that could spark joy in themselves or others. Hope is everywhere if you know what you are looking for, sometimes it just feels a little lost.

deep, deep underground in a system of caves more complicated than an ants' nest, teel decided they had to surface.

the sky above was unknown to them. this kalon, teel (though everyone just called 'em "slick"), would have to see the sky. they'd never wanted to do that. teel was perfectly happy living in the bioluminescent nests that their families had lived in for thousands of years -- above there was nothing. a kit's tale about a black hole, pulled apart like cotton, wrapping around the planet.

and yet, teel had to leave. because /ren/ had. he'd craved more, and teel wanted to be with him. it wasn't romance, since they didn't really have that on teel's planet. it was some intrinsic, yearning desire to be around the other kalon. like they knew something big was in store for him. teel was happy to be the sidekick.

when they surfaced, teel knew they could never return. it wasn't only scandalous to leave the caves, it was a death sentence. exit, no entrance. some psuedoscientific planetary physics concept that couldn't be explained in a few paragraphs -- teel wasn't much of a scientist. everyone thought leaving the caves would mean being swallowed by the black hole. it didn't.

the surface was dusty, untouched. no life had developed since the kalons went underground (nobody remembered why). all that was left was remnants of a base. skid marks on the ground. a ship. words scribbled in the dust on the window with claws.

It felt like there was never enough time to escape. To relax. But maybe they preferred it that way. Blood rushing, never a dull moment, sleeping with one eye open. They couldn't imagine living a normal life, day in and day out at a boring job, filing paperwork for one of their rich relatives. No, they preferred this. They preferred chaos, and all the ups and downs it brings with it. They like it so much that they often seek it out, causing trouble or pushing the wrong buttons when faced with a choice to back down. It's just too much fun for them. The world is a little game, and they want to be at the top of it. Not the protagonist, no, but more like, the final boss. Someone to be feared, with their name on the tongue of the entire world.

Hardly anyone thought to check the old yard sales nowadays, so much was done online. But he had a hunch and it was proven right today. His long, long search was finally over!

He held it close to his chest, sighing out with relief. "What have you got there Gal?" His companion asked, curious. Gal grinned like an idiot, holding it up like a Legend of Zelda treasure and making the sound effect out loud to match. In his hands was an original copy of Bucky O Hare, a rare NES cartridge.

"I never finished the game but today is the day! And it will look great with my collection don't you think?"

"You are such a nerd!"

"Why thank you!" And with a flourish and a bow, Gal bought his prize and headed straight home to finally finish the game after nearly two decades of waiting...
