Ravenmeadow sat watching the kits play, wondering which one would become her apprentice. Fate was unavoidable.

Ravenmeadow hated kits of any kind, even the apprentices yet to become ones with the stars. They were all the same: Something she would never get to have. They were so lucky to be here, and the hadn't the slightest idea. When Ravenmeadow was young, her mother had taken her to the ruins and shown her all the limp bodies of cats who would never awaken. She remembered being horribly sad, but what came next made the pain almost unbearable.

"You see this?" Ravenmeadow's mother gestured to a large statue of six cats standing in a circle, witches, she knew, with a purple star hovering in the center of their paws. It was somehow glowing... but with darkness.

She looked up at her looming mother, who was clutching a coffin-shaped pendant with the same darkly-glowing material inside it, instead of the quartz she always wore. There were tears in her eyes, which had also been replaced with that same purple darkness. Ravenmeadow had never been this afraid in her life.

"My time is coming and you need to know of your curse." Ravenmeadow's mother spoke with the Voices of Darkness, Ravenmeadow was sure of it. She heard those same voices in her head. They made her do things. Horrible things. And they kept her from ever being found out. "The Voices of Darkness are within you, my love." Her mother's coffin pendant was rising, ever-so-slowly, off her neck. Ravenmeadow was terrified.

The pendant slowly fell and locked itself around Ravenmeadow's neck, momentarily choking her. "Love, there is a reason this plaza is in ruins. And this reason- this reason, my daughter, is because you were born."

Ravenmeadow screamed. Darkness enfolded all around her. She pulled at the pendant, but it only got tighter around her neck. She clawed at it, desprately gasping for breath. She began to bleed. She tried to call out, begging for help. Tears spilled from her eyes and clung to her whiskers. She was going to die here.

And for the first time in her life, Ravenmeadow ran far.

Ravenmeadow sent a ruffle through her fur. She shook her head. She could control the Voices now... or at least, she hoped. She knew that she would never be able to do most things normal cats can do, raising kits being on that list. And she faced that fact every day.
