blue, especially in the form of a flower (like the periwinkle flower), symbolized longing, hope, desire, the otherworldly and the infinite in German Romanticism poetry (ca. 1800-1850). today, blue is often a colour used to describe a sad feeling, especially in a relationship like in the song "afterglow" by taylor swift: "i blew things out of proportion, now you’re blue" or in "cruel summer": "it's blue, the feeling i got". so the colour blue in a romantic context changed its meaning over time, which is pretty interesting to me.
