Prompt:The Gulls that fly around the island that the Clan of the Sea Breeze calls home are regarded as "almost sacred" - they are not to be hunted, except in dire circumstances, when the clan can find nothing else.
Despite this, there isn't actually a real, spiritual reason for this. Cats in the clan have theories, mostly around the ghostly spirit of Gull's Wing, the ancient cat who led Heatherstar to the island - but the truth is, Heatherstar just likes them. It's an idea that Ternfeather can easily accept, because he, too, just likes gulls.
Ternfeather began life as Snowy, an indoor-outdoor kittypet who gradually spent more and more time outdoors. Their old twolegs lived on a cliff by the sea, and they were frequently surrounded by nesting gulls. To most outdoor cats, this would have been an opportunity to hunt. Ternfeather, though, just sat and watched the birds. Eventually, even those that knew
most cats were a threat knew Ternfeather would not be, and relaxed in his presence. They became almost a fixture of the site, and they saw many young gulls hatch, grow up, return to have families of their own.
One gull never quite left, though.
Ternfeather had been there at the hatching, face inches away from the nest. Perhaps this chick had assumed he was some strange third parent, perhaps she just liked him. Either way, she stayed, even trying to follow him into his house sometimes. Ternfeather named her Medli, after some strange creature on the "games" they saw their twoleg children playing sometimes, in their briefer and briefer times indoors.
The decision to join BreezeClan was, ultimately, fairly easy. By this point, Ternfeather had become almost completely an outdoor cat. Their twolegs had moved on, seeming to barely remember they even had a cat at all. And the idea that gulls went unhunted... well. It appealed to him.
He was still surprised when, on the long swim to the island, Medli followed them.
Nowadays, the two are a permanent fixture. Ternfeather can't speak gull, nor can Medli speak cat, but they understand each other well enough for scouting missions, where Medli can get a good aerial view and alert Ternfeather if she sees anything from the air that he cannot from the ground.
