It was happening today, she was finally ready to get her warrior name. She had been waiting for what seemed like forever! But it was happening now and she was ready for it, or at least she thought she was.
Copperpaw was desperately hoping for her name to be Copperheart, she felt like it fit her- her mother always said she had a big heart and she wanted something to remind her of her gentle, and caring mother. She had confessed this to her mentor, Hawkstrike, at one point, and he had said it was a good fit for her too but.. it was up to their leader in the end. Moosestar would know what her name was supposed to be and give it to her. She just hoped that Starclan was aligned with what she wanted, just this once.
Copperpaw was called back to the present by her mentor pushing her forwards, and she realized Moosestar had called her name. She flicked her tail in an apology, suddenly a whole lot more nervous once she could feel all of the clan's eyes burning into her fur. Copperpaw struggled not to flinch as Moosestar landed in front of her, unable to take her gaze off of their blue eyes. She was shaking and unsteady, and already everything else was starting to go fuzzy around her, it was like she was underwater.
She barely got out the words "I do" when she was supposed to, the questioning lilt of Moosestar's meow giving away what part of the ceremony they were at. Copperpaw vaguely heard the sound of her name, of the leader going through the traditions of an apprentice becoming a warrior. She thought that she would be able to face this ceremony with confidence and pride, but she felt like a moon-old kit again, barely seeing the outside of the nursery- all shaky legs and an almost sickening mixture of excitement and nervousness.
All the noise of nature around the camp suddenly came crashing back into her ears, like she had finally resurfaced after being underwater for so long. And the event that caused it? Moosestar calling out her warrior name. "Copperclaw." No. No. No. That wasn't right, that wasn't supposed to be her name. Copperpaw- Claw, stared at her leader in disbelief.
That name was far too harsh for her, far too harsh for the kind-hearted and friendly kit that her mother said she was. Copperclaw barely registered Moosestar confirming her new status as a young warrior, something about compassion and bravery, it felt like she was underwater again. But this time she was drowning, drowning in the knowledge that she wouldn't ever be the cat her mother wanted her to be.
She was pulled back to the surface again by her clan yowling her new name around her, pride shining in their voices and their expressions. Copperclaw caught the gaze of Hawkstrike, who had been hard on her from the start, pushing her to become the cat she was supposed to be. She had hated him for it at first. But now, she saw the pride shining in his eyes, in his puffed-out chest. And she couldn't be mad in the slightest. She looked around her clan as the yowls started to die down- she was nervous, unsure if she would live up to this name, if she would become the cat that deserved such a fierce name. But the sound of her clan, who had taken her in from the start and treated her like family, calling out her name, it was exhilarating. Copperclaw could get used to this.
