Kids aren’t exactly my specialty. I wouldn’t say that I don’t like ‘em, per se. It’s just that they’re so dang needy.
And besides, I know absolutely squat about what kids are interested in. Fortnight? (Did I even spell that right?) Memes? Dogs?
It’s essentially one big guessing game. So when I got stuck watching my cousin’s kits, I was just kind of... stumped.
I figured this was a good time to try to see what the triplets were interested in.
“Hey kids,” I said, stuttering and knowing full well I looked like a fool. “You wanna play some, uh, board games or something?”
The oldest, Frances, looked me dead in the eye.
“No.”
“Well then,” I continued. “How about some popsicles?”
“Really? Popsicles?”
Tough crowd. I know they’re city kids and all, but there’s nothing more frustrating than to be out in the beautiful woods and to have three kits who just want to argue about what to do.
“You know what, then. If you kids don’t want to pick, I’ll choose the activity.”
I loosely tied my ears back as the kits exchanged confused glances.
We walked about a half-mile from my cabin. You would have thought I made them walk a marathon barefoot over hot coals by how they complained.
“Aunt Callie, I’m tiiiiired.” “Aunt Callie, I’m boooored.” “Where are we going? This is too far.” “Are we there yet?”
“Okay, kits,” I said, trying my best to put a smile on my face. “Tie back any loose hair and fur.”
“Why?” Asked little Tina.
“I’m going to teach you how to throw an axe today. There’s only two rules: don’t point the axe at anything you don’t want to hit and don’t be stupid. Follow those two and you’re good to go.”
Their puzzled expressions quickly morphed into eager curiosity. They weren’t half bad either.
“Aim it at that pine tree, Max. No, not that one, THAT one,” I coached. “A little more flourish with your wrist, Tina. There you go! See? You did it!”
1 extra:
—Her Diary —
So today was a good day. You know how I’ve been waiting to bring Prudence to the County Fair? Well today was the day.
She wasn’t happy about the trailer but when you’re a spoiled highland cow diva who thinks a trailer ride down twisty mountain roads is too much to ask, things might not be up to your par.
I was so excited to see her stall all ready for her when we got there with the little nameplate for her! It was my first fair so this made me squee with glee. (Ha! That rhymes!)
When it was our turn for the Cattle Division, I was so nervous! Pru did absolutely fantastic, but me? I was an absolute mess! My ponytail started to fall out and I kept tripping over those long old ears of mine. Luckily when I fell flat on my face, the judges were so nice and let me start my conformation handling routine over!
She didn’t win first, but she placed a solid third! And you know what, for only being a year old, that’s fantastic! Couldn’t be prouder of my baby! Next year, first place here we come!
