looking in this crystal-laden mirror
i see you staring back at me -
you did my tie once,
and fixing it in my reflection
tightens the knot in my throat.

and you gave me the bravery
to cut my hair short,
and now i see you in the shadow
of where my long hair used to be.

maybe if i reach out to myself,
i'll reach out to you, too,
to the memory you carved in my skin -
once i reach through this mirror
that i stole from you.

goes the shiny coin
rolling on the street.
dodging the drains
and hiding from greedy hands.

the light strikes the coin,
and it reflects the light back.
even more shiny, I just need to have it.

hopping after it,
first foot, second foot.
third foot, fourth foot.
the coin stops, and I pick it up.

shiny things are everywhere we look

the shine of the moon and the stars
twinkling confidently in the night

the shine of my mother's eyes
when I compliment her cooking

the shine of dancing flames
amidst a smokey beach

the shine of the christmas lights
my father and I hang together

and the shine of a poet's ink
fearlessly cascading from her pen

I love all shiny things
even those I cannot collect

A museum of my misdeeds

3 stray earrings
1 tiny figurine
14 bottle caps
That have a pretty metallic sheen

Sure my collection comes
From a not-so-honest way
But I like my treasures very much
