Lion name: Conleth ("chaste fire")
Lion gender: male
Pride: Ngozi
Pride status: Member of the City of Fire
Prompt:
Conleth was used to lions either shying away from him in fear, or looking to him with calculating gazes as they thought of ways to use his fiery appearance to their advantage. His mane stood in perpetual spikes, making him look large and fierce, and many prides had thrust him into the role of guard or warrior the second he crossed their land. Others convinced him to go on quests for them to rid their land of villains, hoping he would scare them off with his looks.
Conleth was sick of it. He just wanted to be an average, normal lion.
So he wandered, avoiding other lions when he could, trying to find his own territory. He didn't want to be a king, but it seemed like that was his only option if he wanted peace. The plains and jungles alike were already packed with prides, with lions stronger than him that he wouldn't be able to challenge. Despite his appearance, he wasn't much of a fighter. So he went farther and farther. He heard rumors of the Ring of Volcanoes, and he decided to check out that land. It would likely be hard to live there, but at least he would have peace.
The ground darkened beneath his paws as he walked, and trees became more scarce. The air grew warmer. Up ahead loomed dark mountains- those must be the volcanoes. But oddly enough, the air didn't smell like death here. As he drew nearer, it carried the scent of life.
"Halt, traveler!"
A fireball suddenly scorched the ground in front of him, and Conleth instinctively jumped back. What the heck?
He looked up and his eyes landed on a lion that seemed to be on fire, yet it wasn't roaring in pain. It's pelt was a deep maroon, and its paws were grey like ash.
Conleth couldn't help but stare. He'd never seen a lion so fierce looking before. Is this how people saw him?
"Who are you?" The flaming lion asked.
"My name is Conleth," he replied, his long tongue flicking.
"And what brings you to the City of Fire?"
"The... what? I'm just trying to find a home. Who are you?"
The red lion's expression softened. "I am Keahi, Chief of the City of Fire. Any are welcome to attempt to find their place among us, if they are up to the Trials. Come, Conleth, if that's what you desire."
Conleth padded after Keahi. He wasn't sure, but something told him he should at least check it out.
Later, when Conleth had passed the Trials and had been a member of the pride for weeks, he thanked Keahi.
"What for?"
"For not looking at me like I'm different. For making me feel normal."
The firebender laughed. "Con, I am perpetually on fire. If one of us is weird, it's me."
"Still, thank you."
Keahi flicked him with his fiery tail in a gesture of friendship and affection. The flames were cool to the touch. "You're welcome."
