- Mpezi wasn't born under normal circumstances. Years ago, a lioness who couldn't conceive made a wish to have a child. Even if it weren't legitimate, someone she could care for as her own. This wish was made every year on the first day of spring by blowing on a dandelion until the lioness passed. As fate would have it, she was chosen to be the spring goddess. After joining the ranks of the deities, she granted her own wish: to have a child. Not just any child. He would aid her in her duties. He was special. No ordinary lion as he had wings and resembled a bee.
Mpezi didn't grow up like a normal cub. He was created by the goddess and she had made him full grown. Though his mentality was that of a child. With life and experiences he would learn and grow. While he was the product of the spring deity, he held a mortal life and lived among the lions year round. He had taken upon himself the duty of spreading the wonders of the spring goddess. There were few acolytes at all and he was the only one to have been created by the deity he followed and preached of. Some presumed his faith to the goddess was simply because she gave him life. Sure, he was grateful for her but it was more than that. He believed in everything she represented. Life. Birth. Rebirth. Growth. Even during the rains life flourished. He wanted to show his support for her and all she did.
It was a simple plant. Not sophisticated or rare or even well-liked, but Mpezi always liked the dandelion. It had minor medicinal properties being used to make tea and could even be used in salads. When it changed from the yellow blossom to the puffy white seeds, it was always fun to make a wish on them and watch the seeds take off into the wind. Not knowing where they would end up. Would they pass through another pride? Perhaps plant a new dandelion for someone else to make a wish upon? Be the start to someones garden? Possibilities were limitless. It always made him smile.
Mpezi was a happy lion. He always had a smile on his face. Sometimes his wings even fluttered with delight in his happiest of moods. Perhaps another reason he liked the dandelion so much. It always brought a smile to his face when he made his own wishes on them. Others may not appreciate the flower as he did. They were quite a pesky plant. But who didn't stop to blow on them to make a wish when they were a cub? The adults often showed their kids what to do, sharing how they used to make wishes on them when they were cubs themselves. No matter what, at some point a dandelion had made everyone smile at least once. It could be said that Mpezi was a dandy lion himself.
