Pride: Motoheri PridePride Status: Lead Hunter
Prompt:Why do you run?"I can't believe they picked
him."
Nuri's ears perked as he caught the whispers of his fellow hunters and huntresses. Three of them, keeping to themselves at the edge of the training area - they weren't far enough nor quiet enough to go unnoticed by Nuri, but they likely didn't care.
"Look at him! He's so round - it's a miracle he can run faster than a lame gazelle!"
"It's a miracle you can tell him apart from a lame gazelle."
Scornful chuckling pooled around the group, and Nuri shrank despite himself. After Zahr fled the pride, the hunters and huntresses had voted on a new Lead, as was custom. Nuri wasn't sure how, but he had won by a narrow margin. Most those who were against him were... vocal about it.
"I bet he eats half his catch when no one's looking. It's the only way he could be so plump!"
The giggled again, louder this time. Nuri shrank down further, scrunching his eyes shut. He didn't ask for any of this, didn't want their attention or their scorn. He just-
"Hey."
Suddenly, someone was at his side. Nuri opened his eyes, only to find a familiar bright orange face gazing back at him with furrowed brows. Ayo stepped closer, so he was only a few inches away.
"Are you okay?" He prompted gently. "Are they-"
"I'm fine." Nuri snapped. Ayo pulled back slightly, his eyes wide. Nuri's heart sank. "I'm sorry, I just-"
"I know."
Ayo's face was gentle and kind. "Show them what you're worth." He leaned forward to bump heads with a very stunned Nuri. "You're so much more than what they see. Go prove it to them, Lead Hunter." Ayo smiled, and Nuri smiled back.
"Hania, Arij, Najwa!" Nuri barked, turning to face the group snickering behind him. "You're on the next patrol with me."
Arij smirked. "Ready when you are."
"Good." He lifted his chin. "Then we'll leave now."
"I run to prove myself."Arij was the 'leader' of the small group Nuri had brought. She was the lion put against him when it came to voting for a new Lead; she hated having lost, and made it perfectly clear that she felt she should have won. She walked at Nuri's side, too close and too swift, causing him to stumble often.
There was a sound to his left. Nuri glanced to the side, spotting a lone antelope at the edge of the sand and savanna. He quickly dropped into a crouch, making a short sound to signal the others to do the same. Much to his surprise, they kept walking. He could see Arij smirk as the antelope spotted them and fled. He watched the creature bounce away before turning on his patrol.
"What was that?" He snapped. "I gave you the signal to stop!"
Arij smiled coyly. "Is that what that was?" She purred. "I'm used to tail signals - it's so hard to understand those odd little sounds you make." Hania and Najwa chuckled beside her.
Nuri fumed. "You better get used to them." He growled. "Unless you want to explain that you can't understand signals the newest apprentices are taught."
Arij's smiled dropped, replaced now by a cold glare.
Nuri led the patrol after the antelope. The entire way, Arij signaled to Najwa and Hania using the tail signals the hunters and huntresses use - small things, like "noise to the left" or "tracks ahead". It was the usual for all members of hunting patrols to communicate in this way - the vocal signals rarely being used - but with how Arij kept edging closer and closer and the problems he had with her before, just that small act alone left Nuri feeling... powerless.
Suddenly, the winds changed, bringing the scent of antelope. Nuri made the sound to stop a half-second before Arij gave the signal, earning him a quick glare. He smirked as he sank beneath the shadow of the grass, but only just.
After spotting the creature, Nuri glanced to the side to signal Arij forward, only to realize that she was no longer there. He quickly looked around. None of them were there. Tentatively, he peaked his head over the grass, confirming his suspicions. Arij and the others had pressed forward without him. Swearing under his breath, Nuri quickly slunk forward until he was at Arij's side.
"What were you thinking?" He hissed. She shot him a sly look, then swept her paw forward to rustle the dry grass in front of them. The antelope's head shot up, and upon spotting the lions, it began to bray and bound away.
"Look what you did." Arij smirked. "You really are a terrible hunter."
Nuri ground his teeth together. He was tired of Arij, tired of her lackeys, tired of it all. He sprang to his paws and began to chase after the antelope, leaving Arij in the dust.
Just as he began closing the distance between himself and the antelope, he heard another lion running behind him. He didn't even have to look to know who it was. Nuri set his jaw and pushed himself harder, desperate to outrun Arij. He followed the antelope's zigzag pattern even as his lungs began to burn, his focus only on the bobbing tail in front of him. Everything else fell away, until Nuri was inches from the antelope, his powerful legs driving him forward as the creature began to tire. With a low growl, Nuri leapt, bringing both him and the antelope crashing down.
It was barely a fight after that.
Panting, Nuri looked up, only then realizing that he was alone. Arij and the other two were trotting up to him, surprise plain on their faces.
Najwa spoke first. "That was amazing." He marveled, eyes wide.
Arij silenced her with a glare, but Nuri could only smile. He had earned Hania's and Najwa's respect, that much he could tell. Arij would take longer, but now he knew he could do it.
