At the Ice Cream Parlor:

Sylvia was greeted with bells jingling as she entered the parlor. It was a quaint place, with beautifully hand-lettered signs and spinning stools that she had to jump to reach.

Instantly she began looking around. It wasn't surprising that in the early fall heat, right after school hours, the ice cream parlor would be crowded. However, none of them she recognized. There were teenagers in the back, joking with their friends, mothers with their squabbling kits, and a few older adults reading newspapers in the corner.

Was she really being set up?

Meet me at the parlor at 6? Order mint chocolate chip with caramel drizzle and crushed pretzels.

She had to admit, it was an odd combination.

Sylvia crushed the mysterious note in her paw. She'd found it in her locker earlier that morning with no explanation.

Hesitantly, she approached the counter.

"May I please have a scoop of mint chocolate chip with caramel drizzle and crushed pretzels?"

As she said it, she heard a loud crackle of paper behind her. Turning around, she saw that one of the older Kalons reading the newspaper wasn't an older Kalon at all─a kit her age was staring at her with a wide grin.

After receiving her order, she walked to his table. He had the same order.

"Hi," she said shyly.

"Hi!" he said.

He certainly wasn't the Kalon she'd expected to see. His name was- Ranger? She'd never made an effort to talk to him. He was a bit weird, and others usually stayed away from him.

"Why didn't you put your name on the note?" Sylvia asked.

Ranger blushed.

"I wasn't sure you'd come if you knew it was me," he said.

Sylvia couldn't help but smile. Despite his reputation, she was still flattered someone had wanted to talk to her.

"I really liked your presentation on space last week," Ranger said, "it was obvious you really cared about the subject, unlike most of the others."

Sylvia kept smiling. It was true, she was fascinated with the endless wonders of space and dreamed about studying the stars.

"Thank you."

Sylvia vaguely remembered Ranger's presentation that day. He'd chosen the topic of aliens. She hadn't thought much about it at the time, but it was actually a really interesting topic.

"I remember your presentation too."

Ranger's eyes lit up brighter, if that was possible.

"Really! Did you like it? Actually, that's what I wanted to talk to you about. I wanted to know if you thought there were aliens out there. In space. I wanted your professional opinion."

Sylvia and Ranger talked for an hour. She'd never met someone whom she could talk to so easily, even if he was a little odd. But she liked that.

"What I really wanted to ask you," he whispered as they left, "is if you want to join my supernatural club I have with a few friends. We meet up every week to go ghost hunting. It's very secretive."

Sylvia grinned.

"Sure."

Walking into One Scoop For All, Rollen quick rushed up to the counter and placed his small wallet down as he waited for Mr. Robinson to come from the back room. He wore an anxious look on his face as he slowly began to jump up and down as impatience filled up inside of him.

Usually Rollen was a well behaved boy, especially when it came to his favorite ice-cream parlor.
But this time was different; he had to hurry... He needed to hurry.

It was pretty early in the day and Rollen had been out biking with his lifelong best friend Jonny.
The two were inseparable.
They would often go for bike rides together then stop at their favorite ice-cream parlor, (One scoop for all) before heading to the park.

But today was a little different as Rollen was alone,
And it was a bit earlier then when they'd usually come.

Letting out a sigh Rollen placed both his paws on the counter and pushed himself up and took in a deep breath.
"Mr Robinson!"
Placing his feet back down Rollen let out a sigh of relief as he watched the gray old kalon come walking out from the storage room and slowly straighten his glasses before growing a wide smile as he recognized the small blue kit.

"Oh! Hello, Rollen. You're a bit early aren't you? Where's Jonny? I see he isn't here today."
Rollen gave a small nod before looking up at Robinson with pleading eyes.

"I know I'm early, but I really need to buy an ice-cream!"

"Alright, alright now, calm down. There's no rules saying you can't get ice-cream at an earlier time.
So I guess you'll be wanting the Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry swirl with nuts, for yourself. And the Kiwi, Coconut, with nuts, and a cherry on top for Jonny."

"No, not this time. Just Johnny's ice-cream please."

"Just Jonny?"

"Yes sir, I didn't bring enough money with me to get both."

"But don't you and Jonny usually buy your own ice-cream? I imagine if he knew you were coming he would've given you his money."

"Well Jonny doesn't know I'm here, and I wasn't planning on coming at this time, but Jonny got hurt while we were riding our bikes... You see he was trying to show off to some friends of ours and ended up smashing his bike into a tree.
He scrapped his knee pretty badly, and with the pain and embarrassment he began to cry. So I rushed over here as fast as I could because I know his favorite ice-cream would make him feel better. Even if it means I can't get one"

Robinson grew a small smile as he looked at Rollen.

"Well then I'd say Johnny's lucky to have a friend like you. Here you go. Two ice-cream cones on the house."

"But?!"

Robinson only responded with a gentle nod.

Rollen slowly grew a small smile as he took the two cones from Robinson.
"Thank you Sir!"
