Rickert prompt: Rickert, ever the cheerful and plucky Stallion, had always been a good friend to the more shy and reserved mare. She had actually taken care of him as a young colt, and mothered him in her own way, teaching him life lessons and keeping him out of trouble since he had a nose for mischief, not that he grew out of that.
He has always been there for her to support her and keep her company, and wouldn't be where we was if not for her, which is why -when Cherry suffered a rough patch in her life- that he did his best to cheer her up and fill the new hole in her heart.
He remembered that day like it was yesterday, the foggy mountain air had laid moisture across the grass and woodwork of the fences, with the dim morning glow waking up the world. He had been going about his usual routine, prancing aorund and greeting everyone as he passed while being led out to the paddock, but even then he started to get thus feeling like something wasn't quite right although he couldn't quite figure out what. That was until he trotted off across the freshly cut grass and made a lap round the perimeter of the fence, when he find cherry laying down in the grass dejected and sad.
He had of course imediately run over with a concerned wicker, dropping to a slow walk and lowered his head as she turned to look at him, her eyes glossy with tears. He hadn't said anything then, more focused on making sure she wasn't hurt, and pressed his head against her cheek to comfort her.
He had then laid down in the wet grass next to her, his skin shivering at the cold, but did so anyway and stayed by her side for the good part of an hour keeping her warm til cherry got up to graze, walking off with a wilt in her step as she did.
It took til the end of the day for him to find the right moment and ask what was wrong with her, and he had been saddened to hear that she had just broken off a longterm relationship with her Stallion, whom she had loved quite a lot and had always done her best to make him happy, but he just wasn't the one. He left her in a tearful state and that was that, he hadn't looked back at her or said any comforting parting words to her, just up and left her with a broken heart.
After keeping her company for a day or two to keep an eye on her but to also stop her from being lonely or pestered by the other mates, Rickert decided he simply couldn't see his good friend so sad anymore, and started his master plan. He started to goof off and acted silly to make her laugh or when that failed he ran off and grabbed a rake from across the fence and chased another horse with it, but that also failed to make her smile. He brought her food and kept his favourite treats for her and told her jokes or exaggerated stories of his adventures and just in general acted cheerful and goofy and pranced about with his tongue out and rolling in the mudd or chasing his handler with a bucket of water etc.
He did his best to take her mind off things, and it was only when he slipped in mud and fell into a batch of uprooted flowers, did he at last seem to get a breakthrough. She had shaken her head with a hearty sigh and laughed, finally, for the first time since her breakup, and walked over to pluck one of the dirty flowers off of his mane and face, smiling with those kind eyes of hers. She thanked him for keeping her going all those days, and finally decided to move on from her sadness, and knew that she was well supported and loved by others. Rickert practically beamed with glee at his friends admission of moving on because of his help, and got up and kicked n bucked playfully in the air, prancing about as she laughed at him, oh how he had missed the sound of cherry simply being herself.
He was proud of himself for sticking by her like he had promised, and made an effort to help her through her breakup. After that, cherry seemed to get better, she put on more weight again and conversed with others and just seemed much happier, and Rickert was there with her supporting her the entire time.
