Paige loves jamming out to her
music... when permitted. That
is, not at work. But in the comfort
of her own home? Off-key, but no
less enthusiastic, belting.

For the record, Paige hadn’t had any intentions of falling into a corporate espionage plot at the start of the day. It had all started when she was sent to fetch her supervisor some coffee (again).

Not that fetching coffee was all that momentous in and of itself- she’d been asked to do so quite a lot over the course of her internship, actually. What was significant about today’s coffee trip was the conversation she’d had with Adrian.

Adrian was perhaps the only person in her workplace Paige thought she could count as a friend. He was another intern, around her age, with short dark curls and tired eyes. They had first bonded over a shared dependence on coffee, but she’d grown to really like him in the meantime. They often traded small talk over their coffees in the morning. Today, though, Adrian had something else on his mind. Almost as soon as Paige entered the room he was beside her, fiddling with his glasses and brushing her elbow to let her know he was there and whispering, so low she could barely hear it:

"Meet me in my office whenever you’ve got a chance. There’s... something I need to show you."

Ominous.

At the top of Paige’s list of "Things to Not Do If You Want to Keep Your Internship": conversations with precisely the sort of shady hackers one was supposed to not consort with. The type Adrian, as a cybersecurity worker, was supposed to keep out.

"Just hear him out," Adrian insisted, one paw raking nervously through his hair. "Please. I was skeptical at first too, but... what Neo’s saying makes a lot of sense. I had to tell someone, and you’re the person inside Brightec I trust the most."

Paige frowned, trying to stamp down the small warm-fuzzy feelings that gave her. This is highly illegal and enough to get both of you dismissed on the spot, she reminded herself. You can try and talk some sense into Adrian later.

Except.

The hacker, who called himself ‘Neo’... actually made a lot of sense. A horrible kind of complicated sense that left Paige kind of wishing she hadn’t been drawn into this at all, but that also left her unable to deny the truth of the facts laid in front of her.

Brightec, the corporation they both worked for, apparently had a dark side as a massive datamining operation. And Adrian had accidentally, on his work on shoring up the servers, been helping to protect that ‘evil empire,’ as ‘Neo’ put it. And now Paige and Adrian had been inadvertently drawn into Neo’s plan to expose the illegal operations once and for all.

Fantastic.

Paige was definitely going to lose her internship for this.

Adrian is, at this point in time, merely a character concept. While the concept is mine, I do not currently own him, nor is he based off of any existing kalon.
I do hope to make him real at some point in the future, but as of now he’s merely an ‘npc’ if you will. ("Neo" is as well.)

Rain pattered against the sidewalk as Stella rushed into her house, her sketchbook and phone cradled carefully in her arms, hoping to keep them from getting touched by the damaging liquid. Her normally wavy, multicolored hair was plastered against her head, and began to drip rainwater all over her clothing, which probably couldn't get anymore wet than it already was. Stella reached down for the items she'd set down, her hands latching around her sketchbook as she brought it up toward her chest. She opened it and flipped through the pages, hoping no water managed to snake its way onto the carefully drawn designs she'd spent so much time on. A small smile crept onto her face at the sight of her art, which was somehow completely untouched by the liquid. She sent out a silent thank you to whoever may have been listening. Stella straightened herself back up and headed toward her room, hoping she could find something to do to keep herself entertained for a while, after she got out of her soaked clothes of course.

She stopped at the entrance of her room and looked in, her eyes scanning the dark, poster covered walls she knew so well. The sight of it always filled her heart with such warmth, a feeling that was even more of a comfort at this moment. Stella was quick to change out of her rain-soaked clothes, a content sigh leaving her jaws as she pulled on a pair of fuzzy pants and a long sleeved shirt. Once dressed, she walked over to her bedside table and opened its drawer, her sketchbook in hand as she prepared to put it away. She stopped as the drawer squeaked open, her eyes catching on a photograph she seemed to have dropped in there some time ago. It was a picture of her and her then best friend at a music festival. It was the time of her life, and the last time she ever saw her friend before she moved away.

She shook the thoughts out of her head and carefully closed the drawer, her legs carrying her over to the large bed in the corner of the room. She collapsed onto the soft material, a sigh leaving her mouth as she stared up at the white ceiling, her eyes watering as memories continued to flood her mind, filling her with even more warmth. Stella jumped up and reached for her phone, her fingers turning it on and opening the music app, something she had done millions of times before. She opened her playlists and clicked her favorite one, one her friend put together after the festival. She slid the volume bar to as high as it could go and laid back down on her bed, the nostalgia hitting her like a ton of bricks. She appreciated the blast from the past, and would never forget the times she had with her friend, especially now that she had remembered the playlist left behind for her.

Kalani is a dreamcatcher. Or at least she works like a dreamcatcher of sorts. You see dreamcatchers are supposed to trap the nightmares in their webs and only allow good dreams to flow down the feathers to the sleeper below. When Kalani sleeps close to another kalon, she will trap their nightmares and they will have only good dreams. However, this means that Kalani now is trapped inside their nightmares until they wake. She learns the deepest fears of any kalon close to her. The darkest moments of their past and to make matters worse, the nightmares often mix with her own causing much anxiety and sleep deprivation for poor Kalani. She often wonders if the nightmares are even really those of the people close to her or if she is just crazy... The uncontrolled power she has made her a recluse and untrusting of others. Most importantly its made her faith in herself falter. Making her feel like a deranged lunatic that should have a one-way ticket to the psych ward.Yet no one would suspect this. Kalani has made hiding behind a smile an art. Becoming a listening ear to her friends (who she will only visit during the day) or anyone else she feels needs it. All while wishing that just one other person would do the same for her.
