Prompt: Worst day of his life? That's easy, Burningash will always remember it like it happened yesterday.
He grew up in a forest clan, different from the one he's part of now. Back then, he was just an apprentice preparing to become warrior, called Sandpaw. He saw the prey hole pretty empty, to he decided to go hunting for his clan a bit. He wasn't allowed to exit the clan's camp without a warrior to take care of him, but Sandpaw, in his great excitement to help his clan mates forgot about that, and entered deeper in the forest. He managed to catch a mouse, but the smell of prey tickling his nose prevented Sandpaw from smelling the storm approaching. Right after, it started to rain heavily, so the apprentice couldn't find the way back to his clan. Sandpaw managed to find a refugee under a huge tree, then, he heard a deafening sound: the tree he sat under was struck by lightning. The mighty tree lit up like a torch. At the sight of the flames and the smell of the fire, Sandpaw's heart froze in terror. He ran away from the fire as fast as he could, but he wasn't fast enough. A burning branch fell over him, almost killing him. Sandpaw felt the flames overwhelming his fur; the air becoming unbreathable. The hot ash entered his eyes, making them tearing and almost blinding him. He felt his death close, then he closed his eyes.
He heard voices from far away, like he was deep in the water. "The spirits of warriors? Did I got into the Star Clan?" He thought for himself. Then, his mind fell into a deep darkness
The next thing Sandpaw could remember was that he woke up in the medicine cat's cave. A strong smell of herbs and burned fur hit him. Then, what he thought to be an awful nightmare turned out to be real. The fire really happened. He could have been dead if they didn't come to save him.
"Oh, you woke up! Thanks to the Star Clan, I thought you'll be sleeping forever." The medicine cat said. You will be alright soon, she promised him. When Sandpaw opened his eyes, he saw blurry. Alarmed, he asked the medicine cat that's happening. "Well, she said, the fire have changed your eyes colour. Your eyes must be dry after all that hot air, but don't worry, you must have your eyesight back in some hours."
Some hours?!?! He won't be able to do anything for the pack until then. He wanted to become a warrior!
A few days passed and Sandpaw was able to see again. But... that wasn't his clan! And that weren't the cats he grew up with! Confused, he wanted to run far away from these strangers. A beautiful lynx looking tom approached to him and smiled.
"I heard you wanted to be a warrior, he said, I think I can help you with this". And he jumped on a rock, and gathered all the cats around him.
Sandpaw couldn't believe his ears! A warrior naming ceremony just for him, organised by some strange cats he just met?
"...I call this apprentice in front of you. He has been training hard to learn your Code. Since now, he will become Burningash. May he serve his clan well, and the spirits be pleased of him!"
All the cats started saying "Burningash, Burningash!"
After the ceremony ended, he went to the leader to ask him what happened.
"... And you were sitting there, almost died. The fire spread very fast, and we barely could reach you on time. There was another cat laying there, I assumed she died trying to save you..."
That must have been his mother. Burningash felt a terrible sadness breaking his heart. His poor mother was the only family he had left. Now she was gone. He requested some help to get to the nearest source of water. The leader offered himself to come with him.
Burningash was sitting on the edge of the lake, looking at the horizon. Somewhere, up there, his mother's spirit was watching him.
He felt extremely tired and thirsty.
Without his mother, that clan was no longer his home, so he decided to stay in this new clan, just to avoid the pain and sadness his mother's death and his disappearing provoked.
When he stepped to the lake and approached to drink some water, he was horrified of what he saw. Not only his eyes changed, but also his fur! He lost a good amount of his beautiful brown fur, and the rest became dark, just like the smoke.
Since then, Burningash's fur is like a ghost from the past he can't get rid of. Its reminding him over and over again of that fatal day. Anything he would do, he couldn't let his past behind...
