♔Voltaire♔ wrote:"Lay down your head and I'll sing you a lullaby
Back to the years of loo-li lai-lay
And I'll sing you to sleep and I'll sing you tomorrow
Bless you with love for the road that you go..."Her voice was quiet, though pronounced enough for the sweet notes of a lullaby to carry through the small forest clearing. She wasn't the best singer, but she hoped if she sang enough the souls of those lost would find their way home among the stars, which twinkled knowingly in the night sky above. Kyrie knew it was her job to make sure each soul was guided from beginning to end, and though it was difficult, she loved every moment of it. Softly singing the words of her sweet lullaby, she gave the clear water below her a soft caress, watching the ripples as they expanded to the very edges of the pond and disappeared. Her voice shook, small tears framing the corners of her eyes as one small, lonely, blue light appeared from the brush and glided toward her.
Kyrie was one of the very last freshwater mermaids in existence, tasked with the important duty to gather the souls of those who have passed and send them upward into the sky, her lullaby guiding them to the heavens and turning them into stars, where they remain watch over their loved ones for eternity. Her species was semi-mortal, only dying if slain or through accidental death; and terrible events like deforestation and poaching put Kyrie's kind in drastic danger, until the point where only a few survived to carry on their legacy. Freshwater mermaids were much less social than their saltwater counterparts, taking no interest in interacting with any form of life... unless it was at their end. Kyrie thought it was a waste, thought that there was no reason why her kind should be so detached.Kyrie wished she knew how wrong she would be.
