"I, Jasper James Verwood of Raywald, being weak in body but of sound mind, memory and understanding, as also considering the uncertainty of this life and the remaining number of my days, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament. I give and bequeath my worldly estate and all monetary gains to be divided evenly unto my two beautiful daughters, Cordelia Verwood and Desdemona Verwood, or in other case shared at their discretion on the moment of my passing from this life."
At the reference of their names, Cordelia glanced up at her sister also dressed in her mourning blacks and found she couldn't help but notice that she was on the verge of tears. Mona had made the request for Cordelia to perform a second reading at home, despite the fact that earlier that morning they had both attended the official will examination, but she was able to infer that her sister was not coping at all well with yet another reminder of their father's passing. Cordelia assumed the feeling was one similar to salt in the wound but she had done all her crying. After a momentโs thought, she made the decision to skip the main body of the will to the most cryptic section at the end.
"My final bequeathment is of my journal, which I leave to the aforementioned persons. Throughout my life, I endeavoured to fill its entirety so that I could pass it onto them with the knowledge that with the information contained within, I would be able to leave this Earth with their safety assured to me. Alas to this day a single page remains unwritten. I entrust it to my daughters with the hope that they will succeed in its completion. My final wish is that they document the one that evaded my strongest attempts and persisted in its hiding, as I failed to find the wretched beast for them." Merely a few days after the death of their only living parent, the pair set out on a journey of self-discovery fuelled by a newfound thirst to fulfill the mission set by Jasper, their father, as his dying wish. They knew that their knowledge about the hidden world of monsters was limited, so at first they had no clue where to start. Together, they pored through their own father's accounts in his journal with blurred photographs of mysterious creatures and hastily scrawled descriptions as if they had been penned in the dark while the monster in question was around the corner. With each page turned, their interest grew more and more into an obsession as they were informed of a world they had previously known nothing about and with this grew their respect for Jasper. How he had managed to keep all his work and findings a secret from his daughters was beyond them.
Their next step was scouring their home library - as well as stooping low enough to enter public ones too - in order to find mythology or folklore books with the potential to contain any information whatsoever about the origins and behaviour of the evasive beast. Even so, their efforts still proved mostly futile. The knowledge they could find was obscure, undetailed and nowhere near enough to feed into their joint investigation. The Verwood sisters still felt hopeless and considered their achievements thus far insignificant. How were they going to succeed for their father when everything they knew best - books and research - were proving largely unhelpful? Cordelia and Desdemona had both begun their own journals for noting down finding, however between them they had yet to fill a single page with useful information.
What they needed were vaguely reliable eyewitness accounts. If many could not be found then one would have to do, and that arrived on their doorstep in the form of Celia Hayworth.
Celia proved quite a mystery for the two. They had yet to put out an advertisement in the newspapers requesting eyewitnesses of the monster to come forward and be the subject of a short interview, but nonetheless, she somehow caught wind of their investigation and travelled from her hometown in order to discuss with the sisters her experience. All their studies, fruitless as they may have been so far, had been leading to this moment.
"Now, Celia - I do hope you have no objection to us referring to you informally - would you kindly start at the beginning? When did you first encounter this creature?"
"Certainly!" she replied lacing her gloved fingers together and offering Cordelia a warm smile which faded all too quickly, "My children, Samuel and Elsie, were enjoying some exercise a rare day of sunshine late one autumn a couple of years ago. I was alerted to the presence of something awfully strange when I heard them shriek. Of course, I ignored it the first few times assuming that, as children do, they were having one of their childish fights. It became hard to ignore though once my eldest, Elsie, started sobbing violently soon followed by a crash in the other room.
As soon as I got there, it turned out that Samuel had thrown the lamp against the wall and it had shattered. I had only just begun to scold him when I noticed a strange being comprised of tendrils of black smoke hovering near the bookcase. He didn't seem to be providing any particular threat, but its presence was almost certainly too eerie for words. It was just like he was watching us from afar with no particular purpose, bobbing gently in the shade. I did not even have long enough to react while my children were hiding amongst my skirts as it faded away after a minute or so.
Every day or so after that, he would appear again and I was convinced that what we seen had not been a trick of the light. It was scary how quickly we became accustomed to the silent lingering of the being, I'm certain it was releasing some sort of calming gas to prevent us being overly worried by its presence. That was until one day Elsie went missing, and the creature was never seen again..."
Desdemona's quill had been fiercely scratching against the thick paper of her leather-bound journal in an attempt to document everything Celia was describing, but she trailed off and started to stare at the flames of the fire licking the chimney breast.
"I'm terribly sorry to ask this," Desdemona started tentatively as Cordelia eyed the woman semi-suspiciously, "could you please clarify? Do you mean the monster attacked your daughter?"
Celia turned away from the fire to stare at Mona with a hollow look in her eyes as she uttered her next words.
"No, dears, he killed her."

The entire room went silent at this revelation until the maid brought through the tea and scones, at which point the sisters made polite small talk with Celia until she eventually excused herself and left. As soon as the door clicked shut between them and the lady, the sisters found themselves sharing a look which seemed to speak a thousand words. It was only when Mona started speaking that the spell seemed to be broken.
"Cordie, I think we're dealing with something a lot stronger than anything we could ever know," she whispered, a look of fear in her eyes as she awaited her sister's response.
"Mona, it's obvious. That thing is incredibly dangerous. If creatures like this are killing people - and I am certain this is not the first account of death that we will come across in relation to them - then we should be stepping up our game to find these creatures ourselves a lot sooner! We don't have time to be sitting around reading books when they're out there, killing people!" she spoke passionately.
"That is not true, Cordie! Your statement holds no ground, how are we meant to seek out our own encounter if we know nothing about them? The time for action is not just yet, dear sister, it is once we have accumulated all the knowledge we can get," Mona said, trying to reason with her sister whose impulsiveness often got the better of her.
Unfortunately, her disagreement only seemed to add fuel to the fire building up inside of Cordie and Mona began to see a real annoyance behind her eyes.
"Are you trying to say that we should just continue with the same tactics as before, for even longer?" she replied calmly to Mona, but there was an edge to her voice which indicated a rising anger.
"Yes, sister. It would be too dangerous to try and reason with these creatures if we don't even know how their brains work - or if they even have brains!"
"Reason? You think there's reason in monsters that cause death?!"
"It's obvious they have intelligence, Cordie, that thing waited around ages before it made a move on Celia's daughter!" Mona said, holding back any urges to wave her arms around in frustration and making all attempts to moderate her voice. It would be best not to lose her temper in the presence of the servants, but Cordie did not seem to share the same opinion.
"I can't believe you, sister. You would have me wait around and watch as they kill more when our father so clearly wanted us to help people?!" she was silent for a few moments, letting her words sink in as she considered her next move carefully, "No. I will not. I think it's best if we continue our separate ways, Desdemona."
Part of Cordelia knew she had let her passion get away with herself and she still wasn't sure she had made the right decision, but as she packed her bags that night and arranged for a carriage to take her away Cordelia had made peace with her choice.

x Dearest Sister,
Since our split my successes have been bountiful in comparison to our joint efforts, it appears I work best without having to consider the opinions of my peers which in turn hold me back.
Only last night, I succeeded in capturing a specimen. The details pertaining to this would be too long and complicated to attempt to explain to you through a letter, so I will refrain from doing so. In terms of the beast, the gender still remains indeterminate and my tests have been unable to conclude whether this species has the cognitive ability to think or whether it simply acts out of primal instinct. I have devised more to determine if the organism functions in a regular manner or in one more unusual in nature. However, it is early days and I am certain my progress will continue to be positively onward and upwards.
As you may be aware, the behaviour of such a creature is highly unpredictable so I should not leave the fellow unattended for too much longer - though I am certain it would not be able to get very far. Nonetheless, I will still reach the end of my letter very briefly. I hope your progress has been equally brilliant, although I would be interested to know how evenly our father's talent has been split among the next Verwood generation, and I subsequently look forward to hearing from you soon!
Love, Cordie.

Dear Cordelia,
While I admire your achievements and attempts to learn more, I do have to say that your methods are questionable. I strongly disapprove of your treatment of what you call a 'specimen' and also fear you have forgotten the humanity father made certain to teach us as young children. These creatures are living and breathing, just the same as you or me and do not deserve half of the treatment I suspect that one is receiving while in captivity with you. Please bear this in mind, sister. You are going down a dangerous path and before you know it, you'll be out of your depth.
In terms of my research, I have worryingly found quite a few instances where people claim to have seen shadow creatures shortly before the death of a family member, but especially in smaller villages. There are pockets of fear dotted around the country but particularly in villages such as these where its residents are more susceptible to superstition. The shadow creatures seem attracted to close-minded communities as far as I'm aware.
Love, Mona

Dear Mona,
I have begun my hunt, sister. More recently I have been exploring through the wild and bracing the elements to try and capture some more of these awful creatures, but I have altered my approach slightly. The number of deaths we have found accounts of has become cause for action. The time has finally come to end the tyranny caused by this creature, if it can even be considered such for I'm fairly certain my experiments have proved it bears no soul. They are dangerous and need to be removed.
Meanwhile, sister, I struggle to see what effort you are making towards this cause. You have not shared any of your findings with me in the way I have been endeavouring to do so and I feel like you have forgotten the mission father had us set out to do. Are you trying to go against father's wishes?
Your sister, Cordelia
1st May 1825
Sister,
I have made you aware of my dissatisfaction in your methods but you have transgressed all bounds. I consider your actions far beyond any call to duty our father has made and I am disgusted by you insinuation I am disrespecting the memory of our father. I would have been able to reconcile your actions with the sister I used to know had it not been for your disrespect, but now I fear you have gone many steps too far and are no longer the Cordelia I know and love. How dare you try to tell me I make no effort to fulfill the dying wish of our beloved father? I believe it is you, Cordelia, who are in the wrong. We should be trying to learn from these creatures and reason to them. We should be appealing to their better nature, to teach them why what they are doing is wrong, not hunting them down like deer! I believe very strongly that there is a much better way.
I hope you see the light soon.

Dear Desdemona,
We have come across irreconcilable differences in our search to fulfill father's dying wish and it would seem pointless to try and continue to keep contact when all it does is cause arguments to further the rift in our relationship. Our differences and disagreements have gone beyond the mark from whence they can be saved. For this reason, this will be my last letter to you.
I wish you safety, good health and all the best.
Yours sincerely, Cordelia.
6th June 1826
Dear Cordelia,
The time for persistent hatred is over, I miss my sister.
In my awareness of your preference for me to refrain from calling you by your childhood nickname - though I find myself wishing current affairs could be returned to the way they were before father died - I will henceforth continue to use your full name in the hope that you read on. Please.
I continuously pray for your safety and am afraid that the path you are following has only served to thrust you into harm's way. I believe your path will continue its relentless task to entice you further and further into darkness and I am scared I will lose my Cordelia to it, so I find myself writing to you many months later in the hopes you will reverse your decision to cut off contact. I pray this letter finds you safely and that you will consider trading this spiral into darkness for a life at home with me, your sister.
These monsters became my entire life and I lost everything that mattered to me because of them. Still, I find myself obsessing over folklore late into the night but I have been enlightened. I can't do this without you - we can make this partnership work again now that we have grown and learned from our errors. Even if we can't, I have not seen you for two years. Even if you will not stay the night, let alone make it a permanent affair, please come for tea. You are my twin sister - nature would not have us be separate in this way.
I accept that we have both made mistakes and been too harsh to each other, Cordelia. Our arguments have been entirely pointless and the rift between us is not irreconcilable as you once said. At this point, I can only pray that my letters have not moulded nor implied any sort of true hatred towards you, my beloved sister Cordelia. I wish I could make amends for all my mistakes, but for now i just hope you will return to me.
Your loving sister, Mona.
Please return home.
