Jaina lives in the same world as the Jaders, a futuristic world where a city called Riverhead is the largest, most populated city on the planet. Blind from birth, she was raised in a wealthy home in the Inner quarter of the city, so she has not known poverty or had need for anything until Decree 417. Enforced by the Riverhead council, the Decree orders all families, viscet and human, with members that have physical or mental disabilities are to be reported and recorded for the purpose of tracking the importance of individuals, along with their capability for work.

Cast out by her parents because of her disability, Jaina ran from the inner city and found her way to the outskirts where the number of Watchers is significantly smaller. She constantly searches for a cure for her blindness so she can go back to her parents. Jaina herself is a rather odd and quirky viscet, who often gives names to inanimate objects and gets sentimentally attached to things easily. Because of this she has a pouch that she always carries with her that houses a number or random objects, some of which come in handy at the most random times.
