Prompt;
The water rippled beneath Iovi’s feet, violently tugging at her even in the shallow water she was standing in. She was terrified. She smelled of fear to the point that even she could smell it. She wanted nothing more than to back away from the roaring river entirely and turn back to her life.
In this moment, she felt like everything would change. Even as she stood, frozen with fear and straddling on the proverbial fence with her decision, she knew that whatever she chose would change her life.
Iovi shivered as another blast of cold water splashed her from the violently churning river. If only the rains had slowed days ago then perhaps the viscet in the water would be fine-- but he was not fine and Iovi knew she was the unconscious viscet’s only hope. She could save him, or she could leave him to die.
The thing was, Iovi was terrified of the river. But in the split second she had to decide, she realized she was far more afraid of not acting to save this life. How could she live with herself if she let this other viscet die?
Without another thought after that moment, Iovi jumped into the river and swam with the current as fast as she could. The cold was biting-- nearly shocking her system-- but she paddled forward regardless. In the precious seconds it took her to force herself into the water, the other viscet had traveled several yards ahead in the rushing current, and now Iovi was having to swim as quickly as possible to catch up. Even with the current to help, she couldn’t quite make it. She had to dodge debris at every turn, and quickly her muscles were weakening and her stamina was beginning to wane. Her heart beat faster than she could ever remember it doing.
“I’m going to die.” She thought, amidst the panic, but still she rushed forward to the other viscet.
Her terror pushed her forward with another rush of adrenaline, and now she was just a yard away, watching as the other viscet slammed into a bit of debris, slowing him just enough for Iovi to grab his tail by her teeth. The other viscet didn’t seem to react to either the strike or the bite, but Iovi was struggling to both breathe and hold on to the tail, but with one last bit of strength, she grappled onto the log that the unconscious viscet had struck, and pulled up with all her might.
Iovi knew she could pull himself up onto land from the gathered debris. The log was still attached to roots, even if only slightly, and felt firm under her paws, but she didn’t know if she could pull the other viscet-- a young man no older than herself it would seem-- to safety as well.
There was a part of her, the terrified part of her, that told her to let go. Her own cowardice, in that moment, whispered into her ear like a siren calling out to her.
Let his go. It called.
You’ll die if you don’t. Save your life, don’t throw it away. She steeled himself against this dark part of her mind, pushed against it with all the mental fortitude she had, and used what left of her physical strength to pull. She pulled up, her muscles straining and bones popping, with everything she had. She cleared her mind of the river, only focusing on the land, taking it one bit at a time.
“Just one more inch.” she told herself, and then she would gain that inch.
“Just one more inch.” Until she found herself on the land, and found herself tugging against the current to pull the other viscet to safety. With one last pop of her jaw muscle-- one last pull-- she managed to drag the unmoving form onto the land with her, as far from the banks of the river as her exhausted muscles could manage.
Iovi spat blood onto the dirt and collapsed. She smiled to herself as she could see the other viscet’s chest rise and fall.
He was alive.
Iovi could feel joyful tears forming in her eyes.
She had saved him, this stranger with the odd tail she had pulled him by. He hadn’t drowned, they had both survived.
Even as Iovi began to lose consciousness, she thanked whatever power was out there for giving her the strength to take that first plunge into the icy river.

“I don’t know Brutus… maybe this was a bad idea.” Iovi pressed her forehead against the door, and the aluminum sword at her side tapped the wood. She listened to Brutus’s muffled voice through the doorway.
“No, really, it’ll be awesome! Everyone is really cool, and you’ll love it. I promise.”
“But I don’t know any of your friends.”
“That’s part of what’s so great! You’ll get to make a great impression, and meet all kinds of new people. Great people. Please.”
Iovi sighed but finally opened the door to see the fuchsia dressed male before her. He looked fairly ridiculous, wearing clothes that were very medieval and so very feminine. But next to her knight costume, it was pretty cute. ANd the color looked pretty great on him anyway.
“You… somehow, strangely, pull that off.” Iovi couldn’t help but to chuckle as she looked him over.
“Oh, checking me out in it?”
“You wish.” Iovi replied as she gently pushed his shoulders “Now come on, lets go before I change my mind. You know I really don’t want to do this.
With that, they slipped out of Iovi’s house and into the night. It took them about thirty minutes to arrive, even in Brutus’s car, but when they did arrive the party seemed to be in full swing.
Iovi’s heart clenched in nervousness. She already knew this was going to be awful. She could feel it.
“Brutus, are you sure we can’t--” but before she could even finish that sentence, she was being dragged in the door by the arm.
The music was blaring, distracting, with a strong bass that she could practically feel from her feet. She practically clung to Brutus’s arm in the crowd. She was good at not being noticed, and at first Brutus’s friends who approached them didn’t notice there was anyone there beside him, until he introduced her to them.
“This is Iovi. Yeah, we are matching. I’ll explain, it’s just--”
“Er, how about I get us drinks, Brutus.” Iovi interrupted, mostly to get away from all the attention from his friends.
Brutus’s smiled faded, just a little, but he nodded and she slipped away through the crowd.
“So, dude, is she like… your girlfriend now? Who is she?” one of his friends asked.
Another friend, a female this time, raised an eyebrow as she watched the girl go “Not really that outgoing, huh? But she seems sweet.”
Brutus sighed “No, she’s not my girlfriend. But she’s great. When she lets you in, when you get to know her, you’ll love her. She’s brave, and brilliant.”
“If she’s not your girlfriend, then what’s up with the… matching costumes. And why are you dressed as a chick?” the first friend asked.
“Well, see--” Brutus began “The thing is, I’m the damsel in distress, and she’s my knight in shining armor. She actually saved my life once, about a six months ago when we first met. It’s a pretty crazy story actually. Maybe we don’t really have time for--”
“Oh, oh no, you are not getting out of this!” a third friend grabbed him around the shoulders “Now tell us what happened! We have to know!”
Brutus realized he hadn’t thought to ask Iovi if she was comfortable with him telling other people what had happened, he knew she was still a little strange about it when it was brought up. So, instead of telling the truth he quickly fabricated a tale, and eventually his friends slipped off again.
By now, Iovi had slipped into a restroom to compose herself, let herself calm down a little before rejoining the party, but by the time she had, Brutus had told at least five different versions of the story, each one a little more outlandish than the last.
“So you’re the girl that saved Brutus from the burning train! Wow, you’re really awesome! Thanks for saving my bro!”
Before Iovi could even register what he had said, the guy was gone.
“Oh… okay?” she mumbled as she made her way through the crowd. She was stopped two other times on her way to Brutus, both stories being untrue and more ridiculous than the first one she heard.
Eventually, her nervousness was completely gone, and was now replaced by anger.
As she approached Brutus, Iovi gripped his shirtsleeve and jerked him down roughly “What kind of game are you playing at, spreading lies to all your friend about me?” she practically hissed as she narrowed her eyes “What is
wrong with you? Did you bring me here just to tease me?”
Brutus had had an amused glint in his eyes, but now all that reflected back to Iovi through them was worry and guilt.
“I didn’t mean to… I was just joking around. I thought it would be funny. And you… didn’t seem to like talking about the river, I thought if I lied to explain the costumes, you would be more comfortable--”
“I’m afraid of the water, Brutus, are you happy now?” she admitted to him “I’m terrified of the water, especially rushing water. I’ve been afraid of it for years, since I almost drowned as a kid. Is that what you wanted to hear?” Iovi turned away, holding herself as she stepped away “Please just… stay here. I’ll-- I’ll be back. I didn’t mean to blow up on you like that.” her angered expression faded, leaving only a tired look behind.
Brutus watched her back as she walked away, and remained standing for several minutes before he made his way outside to find her.
He wasn’t surprised to find her up in a tree, off in a dark part of the yard. Just knowing her as long as he had, he had seen her climb more than one tree to get away from it all.
“I’m sorry.” he called up to her softly “I should have figured it out, or at least asked. I shouldn’t have lied.” he paused for a moment “What you did for me? Even more amazing now that I know you hate water. You really are amazing, you know that? Most definitely my knight in shining armor indeed.”
Iovi chuckled “Yeah, I guess I am, my damsel in distress.”
“Can I come up?”
“Yeah, come on up.” Iovi replied. She watched him climb the tree slowly, and shifted so he could settle in beside her.
“I’ll tell them the truth, about the river, and let them know I was pulling their legs. Sorry, I should have spread that other stuff without asking.
Iovi smiled “No, it’s ok, I overreacted because I’m not really great with crowds either.” she paused a moment “And boiling acid? Really? Who is dumb enough to boil acid? And why would you have been dangling over it? That story made zero sense.”
Brutus busted out laughing “Well Levi will believe anything.”
Iovi laughed along with him, until they were comfortable around one another again. Finally, after thirty minutes, they made their way back into the party.
It seemed as if the party had been waiting on them.
“Hey!” one of Brutus’s buddies said when he first saw them “You told a bunch of a different stories! So was it all a lie? What’s going on, bro?”
Both of them laughed at the same time, and Brutus looked to Iovi, who nodded.
“Beat us in pool and you’ll hear the real story.”
No one could beat them. Their real story remained a secret for quite a while after that.
