"Are you listening? I'm not going to repeat myself. I refuse to." Mauli huffed, turning his nose up slightly. "Don't you have better people to be interviewing? Surely I can't be that intruiging for our royal majesties as to send their advisor to interrogate. Is that it? Are you going to arrest me?" Although sounding harsh and cynical, a defensive tone mixed with worry resonated in his voice as Mauli spoke to Dahlia, the royal advisor.

Dahlia sighed and shifted to get comfortable. She had been worn by the monarchs that this may be difficult. It wasn't always easy to recruit people for the Mages' Circle, and this particular mage's talents were unheard of. Tracking Mauli down was challenging enough, the mage seeming to leave no trace of himself, the only evidence he had visited being the words of villagers and merchants. The bigger challenge appeared to be getting his to actually talk. Dahlia needed to turn in her report by sundown for King Mordecai and Queen Aonani to evaluate, and Mauli wasn't going to make this easy for her. "It's not an interrogation, and you are in no danger of being arrested, unless you've committed a crime and you would like to confess?" She asked playfully, hoping to ease the hostile viscet in front of her. Mauli scowled, baring his teeth slightly at her taunts. Dahlia wilted slightly, put off by the increasingly rude behavior. "No? Then lets begin. First, I am required by decree to ask, Mauli, mage of the demigod Laurel, do you understand in complete terms why we are talking on this seventeenth day of Snowfall?" She pulled a quill and parchment out of her pack as she spoke.

He nodded his head and responded, "To discuss which is decided by our queen and king. To determine my potential worth for the kingdom and the good of the viscets who reside within." He spat the words, adding under his breath, "not like I have a say in the matter."

Dahlia perked her ears up, her eyes glinting with mischief. "Would you care to repeat that? I'm sure the king and queen would love to have that on official record."

Snarling, Mauli shook his head. "No madame."

"Good." A smile played at the edge her mouth as she spoke. "Mauli, please describe with as much detail as possible the exact nature of your magical abilities."

Tension left Mauli like a wave. This he could talk about. Having been concerned he would be forced to discuss his past, Mauli had dreaded every moment leading up to this conversation. He couldn't discuss his history, but this? This was almost laughably easy for him to talk about. "I can alter the life energies to enable and enhance the healing of others." He smiled smugly, settling into the armchair.

"I'm sorry, but could you phrase that in lehmans terms?" Confusion plastered Dahlia's face.

"Oh uh. So, everyone has life energy. Everyone has difference amounts. This energy is what fuels us. Everything we do, every thought, every movement of every day comes from this energy source. Some actions require more, some require less, and everyone can store different amounts. We automatically replentish it, but as we get older we slow down how quickly we can restore it. When we run out of life energy, we die. It's the way of the world." Dahlia nodded her head to signify she followed, so Mauli continued.

"I can sense people's life energies. I can see it ebb and flow. Yours right now, for example, is vibrant and strong. Beautiful and bright, really. You are in excellent health." Dahlia flushed, fidgeting in discomfort although Mauli's remarks were completely harmless. "When people are injured or sick, their life energies drain as their bodies fight to recover and heal. The more severe the injury or illness, the more energy it requires to recover. Sometimes it requires more energy than people have. In normal scenarios, the afflicted would then pass away. However, that's where I come in." A wicked grin spread across Mauli's face as he spoke the next sentence. "I can borrow life energies from a viscet and channel them into another viscet. Therefore, I can save the dying."

Dahlia blanched, and her paws began to shake as she wrote the transcription of their conversation"Does it kill or harm the viscet you borrow from?" Her voice cracked as she spoke.

"Not usually. I only can take what the other viscet needs to recover, and the borrowed life energy usually replentishes itself rather quickly, although it will leave the viscet it's borrowed from quite fatigued until that point."

" You said not usually, can you elaborate? And what if it requires more energy than both viscets have combined?" She whispered, afraid to know the answer.

"Sometime's, it requires too much and can disable the donor. If it takes all the energy from the donor, they die, and if it takes more than they both have combined, they both die." Mauli stated matter of factly, shrugging his shoulders. He paused, the air heavy around them. "I guess now is a good time to state that the donor of the life energy has to be completely willing to give it up. They cannot be coherced at all, even with magic."

"Oh!" Dahlia visibly relaxed, obviously relieved by that information. She furrowed her eyebrows deep in thought. "What if the donor doesn't know it would kill them? Could they still be considered willing?"

Mauli's whole body stiffened and he grimaced as if in severe pain, speaking through clenched teeth. "Yes. But I won't do that. Ever. Not again."

The advisor scrunched her brow together, puzzled at his last statement. "Not again? What do you mean?'

A vicious low growl rumbled deep from Mauli's chest. "This conversation is over." Quickly standing up, he found his way to his horse. He mounted quickly, cantering towards the kingdom's border. Dahlia watched the mage leave, saddened by whatever must be haunting the poor mage's thoughts.
