"Vanilla? I have a question."
The darker bovine turned, holding the small plate of cow cookies in her teeth, and giving a questioning look before putting down the pastries. She didn't speak, but her eyes said all that she had to say. Caramel paused for a moment, not wanting to say it right away.
"Do you regret adopting me?"
Almost immediately, the other heifer rushed over, quickly going to bonk her head on the other affectionately. "Of course not, sugarcube! In fact, you might be one of the children I'm proud of the most!" Caramel smiled, softly bonking her mother figure's head in return. Before the brown and white heifer could even get another word out, Vanilla was continuing to talk, making her way back to the other side of the small table that she had in her stable. "Heck, lil' one. You know that me takin' care of kids like you is what kept me kickin' back when I was a younger heifer! Why would you ever think that I'd regret takin' you in?"
The smile on Caramel seemed to dim at the question, not knowing how to answer, or if she even wanted to answer. She didn't want her momma to be upset about her answer, and with the cold setting in from the Autumn breeze outside, she didn't want to say the truth due to how her mother tends to faint easier in the cold. However, she couldn't just lie to her. That was just wrong, she learned that when she was young!
"Momma... I just thought that you'd start to hate me because I wasn't bein' too smart. I always do things wrong around here, and I'm makin' people mad because of it. I thought you'd be mad at me too, or worse yet- embarrassed with me! I'm sorry that I thought that momma, I just got worried about it like I always do."
Caramel expected the noise of quick shuffling, or the sound of a gasp, or the sound of yelling, or... something. Vanilla stayed quiet for a moment, and put one of her hooves up to her chest, looking away with some kind of shame. However, the shame wasn't in Caramel... it was in herself.
"Caramel, sweetheart. I know how you feel. I used to be like that when I first arrived here. I thought that I was some kind of stupid, and I thought that good ol' Farmer Vid would regret rescuing me from that horrible farm. He never did, though. He always thought the things that I thought were stupid were... quirks that made me who I was as a living being. Like I'd ever say that you ain't able to have quirks that you think make you stupid. I love you, Cara. You're my lil' angel."
Caramel started to tear up, trying her best to move over to Vanilla and squish her face up to the other heifer. Tears continued to roll down her as she spoke.
"I love you, Momma."
