kiyo has a voice recorder, from her parents, when her family realized she couldn't talk. she was mute. a strange gift if one couldn't talk in it. the voice recorder was pre-recorded though, her parents saying the basics in it, kiyo using it to talk to others. it was a huge hassle, but kiyo and her family couldn't afford to buy a sign-language classes for her yet. her childhood was rough because of that but she continued using it, until she didn't need it. why do they have a voice recorder?; harrow is a bit strange, but has a mind to absorb anything she can get. she goes around, listening in on conversations of all kind. she’ll hear a word she doesn’t know, and listening in for meanings and context. then, she will record the word and meaning in her own context to use later. it’s basically a personal dictionary by her, for her, since she’s typically rejected from most conversation due to people thinking she’s weird. this is how she learns, eavesdrop and educate. To document notes during their travels across a dying forest- mainly to record accounts of the wildlife that is still left in the diseased forest and also to take note of the plants that seem to be fighting the sickness best. Talking to it also helps pass time, as walking alone in a forest can get pretty boring.

why do they have a voice recorder?; Cas suffers from memory loss. It's not as bad as it sounds. In fact, if you didn't know better you'd just think he was forgetful. What bothers him the most is that what he forgets seems to be completely random. He might forget that your bestest goldfish friend died yesterday, but remember he stepped on a leaf that looked remarkably like his uncle. Or remember the exact date and time of your next gathering, but forget how to get to your lair, even if he's been there on several occasions. So he's taken to recording anything he thinks important.
