"Stella, I don't understand why you're so upset. You're beautiful, you've got plenty of suitors. Why are you so worried?" Stellan's unsupportive mother was standing in the for of his room, starting at him with slitted eyes. He looked away from her, running his fingers through his recently cut hair. That's what has started the fight. He'd cut it short, very short, because he'd seen the long line of suitors waiting to meet who he wasn't. They'd been standing in line to meet who his mother made him out to be. A polite, caring, submissive princess.
He was a prince. His mother and father were unsupportive. "Don't call me that!" He turned to his mother as her eyes widened in surprise, then narrowed in anger. She marched right up to him, her face inches from his. " You're not a bot. None of those suitors out there will want anything to do with you."
He stood up. "I don't want them or anything to do with them." He pushed past his mother, grabbing clothes left and right and shoving then into a bag he'd picked up from under his desk. "If you want a queen, have another kid." He hissed, throwing his door open and disappearing down the hall and out the castle.
Two weeks had passed since he'd left. He was staying with a pleasant, happy family who didn't own much but still took him in and cared for him. He did his part. They didn't ask questions. He wanted so badly for the family to be his own, but they weren't, and he was alone.
"Stellan?" The eldest son of the family, Ben, had found him curled up under an apple tree on the edge of their farm. "Why'd you lie?" He held up a missing poster, showing Stellan's old picture. "This is you, isn't it?"
Stellan looked at the picture for a long moment. "That's The princess, couldn't be me."
"No," Ben smiled. "That's the prince. It's you."
Stellan looked at the boy, his facade slipping, his eyes welling with tears. "Please don't tell. Don't give me back to her. You don't have everything you'd ever want here but you have a supportive family. I'd give anything to have such a supportive family."
Ben sat down beside Stellan. "Stell, we knew all along. We'd never give you up. And you do have a family. You have us. You have me."
