Prompt:I've always felt connected to
earth.
Story:The rain nourishes me.
The sun, while hot and fiery, hurts my flesh and bone.
Water destroys me.
I am nothing more than-“Uuuuuggh.” He crumpled up the paper and shoved it into the back of his notepad. “I can’t get it right no matter how hard I try!”
Dairik looked over, setting his book down in his lap. “What’s up, man?”
Calcifer rolled his eyes. “Clearly he’s been writing. Get a grip.”
Dairik glared at him. “You’re one to talk, Mr. Oblivious To Basically Everything.”
Keisuke broke the tension. “I can’t get this poem right. I keep trying to explain this neat idea I have, but I just can’t…put it into words.”
Calcifer sniggered. “We can’t word good.”
Dairik stared at the ceiling in annoyance. “I’m the English major, here. Speak for yourself, college dropout Cal.”
“At least I have a job,” he threw back, tossing his head haughtily.
Keisuke slammed shut the book he’d been writing in, grabbed his pencils, and darted outside. He sensed his roommates' bickering would quickly lead to them getting into a fight, so he decided he’d stay away until they cooled down.
He followed the winding dirt path through the trees, eventually reaching his favorite spot. He sat on the fallen log that rested less than a foot away from the babbling brook that ran through the forest. Keisuke had found the spot within the first week of exploring the area around the house he and his two roommates were renting together. Dairik had just gotten accepted into college and was doing his best to better his life. Calcifer had quit college long ago and had just gotten kicked out of yet another support group his parents kept paying him to attend for his “attitude problems,” as they called them. Keisuke sighed in relief to get away from their bickering. Dairik had his nice, fluid moments, but at times he could be harsh and cold. Calcifer was always hot, like burning coals, and had a temper that could flare up at the worst possible times.
Pippa, the fourth roommate, wasn’t around often – she flitted about, frequently travelling and never staying in one place for too long. She usually kept the peace, seeing as she was Dairik’s older sister, but without her there to keep things in check, it was hard to keep everything under wraps.
Keisuke suddenly had a thought. He was so enthralled by this idea that he spoke aloud. “Pippa’s the air and wind. Calcifer’s the fire. Dairik’s the water. If that’s what they are, then what am I?”
And suddenly, he got an idea for his poem. He began to write.
The rain nourishes me.
The sun, while hot and fiery, still gives me light enough to grow.
The wind drifts through my fur and makes me feel alive.
My roots spread through the soil as I get older.
My claws dig into earth and I finally feel
Peace.Keisuke smiled and closed the book, finally accomplishing his goal.

Extra:Keisuke yawned, stretching in the sunlight filtering through the trees. He felt calm and at peace as he looked around the forest as light threw dappled shadows onto the dirt floor. His ears flicked around, locating the birds filling the air with song. They shifted slightly, sensing the babbling brook cheerfully cascading down the slippery rocks in the distance. He stood, feeling the dirt shift beneath his weight and seep in-between his paw-pads and beneath his claws. He blinked as his eyes adjusted to the light, small sunbeams alighting on dust particles floating through the still morning air. He smelled the air and nodded – food wasn’t too far away, and was scurrying in the undergrowth. He smiled to himself, completely at peace. He wished he could stay here forever, one with the forest. With a sigh, he stepped forward, knowing that he’d have to leave and get his duties for the day completed. With a glance over his shoulder, he promised he’d come back again, sometime in the not-too-distant future.
