All his life, Maxwell has struggled to fit in with his peers due to his financial situation. He hated the pitying looks that his mother got whenever she pulled out her EBT card, he loathed having to wash the tables in front of the entire cafeteria because he had free lunch, and he despised that all of these things made him feel sub-human. It was like everyone thought he was lesser or that his mother was a poor parent all because she couldn't buy him the newest, shiniest things. Being lower class was like being a spectacle; no matter where they went they were stared at, whispered at, and judged by others for factors entirely out of their control.
Maxwell knew that his mother tried her best to provide for him. She worked two jobs while he was in grade school and would often send him to relatives, none much better off, during the nights or on weekends so she would work more shifts in hopes of having enough to scrape by on bills. On the playground, his rugged hand-me-downs would hang awkwardly about him just as he would tip-toe around the throng of children that he felt so isolated from. Their jeers wounded his heart and while hot tears dripped down his cheeks, he realized that all he truly wanted was to be a part of something greater than himself.
He felt so alone from everyone else during the school day and he did nothing but stay with family otherwise. Other kits would visit each other or go to movies or even go out of town in each other's company but he was stuck at home, penniless, and messed with his thrift store toys. Years bled into each other and he began to swallow his pride in order to aid his mother in whatever way he could. It no longer mattered what others thought of him or how his outward appearance came across to others, he came to know that these bullies were insecure of themselves just as much as Maxwell was. They poured so much time into their outward presence that their inner self was hollow, nothing more than a shell of cruelty.
Maxwell began to work around town doing weird jobs or offering his skills in diners or retail shops. Each paycheck brought a swelling of pride in his heart. He may have come from nothing but perhaps with determination and the support from his mother he can make something of himself. Finally, he is secure.[ 419/500 ]
