the fiddler
constellation story;;
There once was a musician whose skills were laughable at best; he was known in his town as The Fiddler, for his simple instrument of the fiddle he often played. He would stay in his home village, playing his beloved music for the locals, until one day, when an elderly traveler arrived into the local restaurant he often played for. As the village was quite small and unknown, it was very uncommon for travelers to stumble upon the town. He kindly tossed a coin to The Fiddler, and asked for him to play an
old tune.
With a flip of the coin and the wink of an eye, The Fiddler began to play the tune without a moment's hesitation. His smooth, flowing music filled the room and ears of the old traveler. Once the song ended on its final low note, the traveler looked at him with amazement.
"Why, I ought to take you to see the king! I've never heard a fiddler as impressive as yourself."
The Fiddler, while happy to get the recognition, didn't see himself as worthy of the king's attention; he was sure there were plenty of other skilled fiddlers already at the king's lofty castle.
"That's unnecessary. I'm sure there are plenty of other, better fiddlers at the king's disposal."
"No, no! Let me take you tomorrow; I'm headed to his castle anyways."
Sighing, The Fiddler obliged.

The king eyed The Fiddler oddly, and was not impressed by his song.
"You have wasted my time. Please search elsewhere for a job."
The traveler had seemed to abandon The Fiddler; he was nowhere in sight and The Fiddler was left with no one for backup. He left the castle sadly, but was interrupted by a priest outside of the main doors.
"That was most a most excellent performance, young Fiddler! May I suggest for you to travel to the temple of Bragi? He will certainly help you along your career."
Exhausted, and lost, The Fiddler saw no reason to not take up this offer. Perhaps the great Bragi would be willing to spare a moment to him? He thanked the priest, and headed to the temple.
"Lord Bragi, I ask of you, please help me with my fiddling practices!" He begged at the altar.
To his surprise, the god answered him.
"I will grant you great success in your career, if you promise me one thing: you will play for me in the heavens in afterlife."
"Why, of course. I humbly accept your offer, Lord Bragi. Thank you very much! I will be eternally grateful."
To his surprise, it was not all just a dream; his fiddling greatly improved over the years, and The Fiddler soon became known as a master, renowned throughout the country for his impressive skills. Even the king recognised his talent, and hired him to play in his courts.
And, The Fiddler kept his promise to the god; when he reached the end of his days, his spirit flew into the stars where his music could forever be heard by the Gods. It is there he continues his passion, even after death.
It is said, if you're stargazing on a clear night with a coin in your pocket, you may be able to spot The Fiddler playing in the sky; and, if you flip the coin and wink, as he once did, you can faintly hear his playing in the distance.
