the young kalon groaned in frustration as she waved her paw for what felt like the thousandth time, hoping that this time she'd get it right and the magic would work. no glowing glitter filled the air, and there was no sound of bells, so hexe groaned again, this time more for effect, and gave her mentor a glare. as she unbuckled the glove and slapped it down onto the table, the glossy motif on the back gleamed reproachfully, suspiciously similar to the gleam in the eyes of her mentor as he raised his eyebrows.

patient my ass! the younger kalon snapped. i've been patient since the day i got this damn thing and it still doesn't work!
archie (or, as hexe was meant to call him, master winston) flinched. now, hexe, there's no need for foul language. are you going to apologise?
they sat in silence for a few moments while hexe steamed and archie waited, both staring at the glove in the middle of the table. when it seemed like there would be no reply, the older kalon sighed, and relented. oh, alright. why don't you take a break and go outside to cool off a bit? we can continue this session later.
finally! hexe cried. right, i'm out of here.
she paced to the door, and would have hurried out into the street if her mentor had not quietly cleared his throat. aren't you going to take your glove? you might need it.
hexe was about to reply with a snappy comment, but saw the hopeful look on archie's face and sighed. ugh, i suppose. just this once.
she snatched it up and was gone.

the young kalon stormed through the windswept streets, her angry glare as turbulent as the weather. as a fresh deluge of rain dropped from the heavens, she clutched her hat and ducked under the awning of a nearby stall, unwilling to return to her classroom just yet.
the rain outside became even heavier, and hexe, realising that she would probably be best off staying under cover, looked around thr stall curiously. strange things hung all around - ancient weapons and objects with an obvious magical history to them. the air buzzed with power.
hello, young kalon. the gravelly voice came from the back of the shop, startling hexe - its owner was so hidden im shadow she hadn't seen them at all. why do you come into my domain so... angry?
hexe paused, considering it. maybe this old kalon could help her with her... magical problem. it's my wand, she declared, waving it at the shopkeeper. i can't get it to work.
there was a strange, hungry gleam to the other kalon's eyes as they reached out for the glove. let me see, child. they turned it over and over in their paws, inspecting the gleaming motif on the back and tracing the wristband. i see the problem, they declared finally. this glove is just not powerful enough for a young mage of your strength.
hexe hardly dared to believe it. of course! the problem was with the glove, not her. what do you suggest, then? she asked, giddily. what should i do?
the older kalon smiled. take on a better weapon, of course. they reached out, seemingly at random, and selected a carved wooden wand. take this. in exchange for your... old wand.
hexe made the deal eagerly, greedy for the power that awaited her. pulling her cape tighter around her shoulders, she hurried out into the rain, eager to try out her newvwand and show archie what a real mage could do.
behind her, under the red canopy, the old kalon chuckled as they admired the glove, now firmly buckled around their wrist. so long, sucker.
