Zodiac Sign

Callista is a kindhearted, gentle Viscet, like a sheep. She is motherly and protective, often treating others like her children no matter their age. Always considerate, she just wants others to be safe and healthy. She just wants the best for everyone she meets, despite her delusional ways of ensuring their safety. Callista is also very creative. She has a high imagination, which she loved to use to entertain her family. Now that her mind has partly deteriorated, her imagination causes her to try to fill in the empty metaphorical hole in the heart. Despite this, she is very, very insecure. Callista works very hard to please others, sometimes too hard. She's very indecisive, always feeling like the decisions she make are always wrong. Her decision of keeping her son locked up that ended up in getting her son killed particularly left quite a dent in her self-confidence. She is also quite moody, but mostly it's because of her current mental state. She can turn from saccharinely pleasant to downright vicious with the wrong action or word.

Callista also has some traits from her western zodiac, Libra. Tactful most of the time, even in her delusional state, she knows how to pick her words to convince others. She loves to keep the harmony and peace, and she loves balance. However, she can be quite vicious if needed. A trait that Libras are said to have is their tendency to like the company of others. Callista, having been alone for a very, very long time, is no longer quite right in the head. With her tendency to wallow in self-pity, she has drowned herself too deep into that pit of self-pity. She still holds on to hope, which connects her to the world, preventing herself falling too deep.

Favorite Tradition

Every New Year (Chinese New Year), Callista would make Niangao. She makes more than necessary for one person, due to her far-fetched hopes that her mate and "children" would come back. Despite the lumpy shapes of her Niangao, Callista's Niangao cakes are actually quite delicious and sweet. It's a very special tradition for Callista, for it represents how, even when everything went downhill, there's still one thing that stays the same. Years ago, when she still had her son and mate, she used to teach them how to make Niangao. Real, neat Niangao, unlike the lumpy ones she makes now. However, her son and husband weren't very good cooks. Their Niangao would turn out as horrible abominations instead of proper Niangao, being misshapen lumps of sweet, glutinous rice. However, it was the memories that counted. Keeping up this tradition even when they are gone fuels Callista with one single thing that manages to keep her alive (although her mind has gone a bit wrong): hope. She holds onto the hope that her mate would come back from his trip one day. She holds onto the hope that the various "children" (visitors that she took care of like her own) that had come would one day visit her. She hopes that on this new year, she wouldn't have to be alone. Not anymore.

Niangao symbolizes the promise of a better year, a bitter irony seeing Callista's current conditions. Year after year, nothing changes. Callista would still be alone. The occasional "child" comes, they stay, they leave and never come back. Still, Callista continues on this tradition. Even if it doesn't mean that her mate wouldn't come back that year, at least she still has happy memories of the time when her family was still intact. She would cherish them.

Always.

New Year's Wish

Callista sighed as she looked at the table and chairs of her new home. It was set for several people, but... there was nobody else except her. She grabbed a framed picture of her family and put it in the center of the table. Then, she set out three dishes, one for herself, and the others... Callista fixed her braid and smiled a lopsided smile, her eyes twinkling with a sense of nostalgic delusion. She went to the kitchen and brought out a plate of Niangao. Misshapen, terrible lumps of sweet glutinous rice. She giggled to herself as she cut out three slices and placed a slice on each plate. Then, she sat down on her chair. "So..." she said, in a pleasant voice as if she's holding a real conversation. It would've been very convincing, had her ears not twitch in an uneasy fashion. "How did your trip go, dear?" Callista asked, turning her head to an empty chair. No response. She let out a piercing, prolonged volley of giggles. "Oh, how silly of me! You haven't even returned! Of course you can't tell me about your trip... Well, no matter. I'll tell you about all of our new children. I'm sure you'll be excited to meet them, son!" She turned to the other empty chair. Yet again, not surprisingly, no response. Callista sighed.

"I know, I know... You're in a better place now, aren't you?" she said, with a sad, but unnatural smile. "Haha... You can't come back, can you? Not in that beautiful paradise you're in... Well, no matter. I'll just tell you all about them." Her eyes gleamed with a sense of crazy cheerfulness. It's clear that this Viscet isn't quite... right in the head. She took a bite of her lumpy Niangao. The sweetness of the cake filled her mouth. It was sticky and delicious, but it was nothing like how her son used to make them. She giggled as she remembered the horrifying taste and appearance of her son's Niangao cakes. "Well... I suppose we should start with the wishes, huh?" Callista said, smiling a bit too wide. "Let me start."

"I wish... I could see you all again."

"Don't get me wrong," Callista said, hastily, as if trying to justify herself to her 'invisible' son and mate. "Life here is... okay, at least. But even the forest gets small after a while... and the children that come here never return for a visit." Her ears drooped as her long braid started to unravel. Swiping her paw over her braid, it returned to its usual glory. As she stared at her malformed Niangao, she felt a prickling, heating sensation around her red and yellow eyes.

Ah, how long has it been since then?

It was years ago. Even now, she's still as young as she looked back then. It was something to do with her powers, for sure. The townsfolk had always mistrusted her. Called her a witch, in fact. Despite that, they still came to her for solutions to their problems. Callista had always wanted to help her mate. He had to shoulder the burden for all of them, and Callista wanted to help. The payments she got for her assistance were really generous, enough to sustain her whole family.

It all went wrong one fateful day. Callista failed to help a client, and made an abomination instead. The client was a very powerful noble. Enraged, she spilled the beans to the king and queen. The queen, having promised not to kill Callista and her family, proposed an exile. However, seeing the abomination Callista created, the townsfolk weren't having that. Rocks flying everywhere, teeth bared and claws slashed, Callista and her family had to move out to avoid being burnt on a stake. Callista found a cursed forest. Believing it to be the safest place to hide, they moved in the forest and built a small cottage similar to their old home in layout, but significantly smaller. Life ran as usual, and Callista sometimes went out to a nearby village to buy food.

However, Callista's mate decided that enough was enough. There was no way they could keep living in a dingy house, secluded from civilization. He decided to set out, to bargain with the old kingdom. He never returned since. From then on, it was just Callista and her son. Being overprotective, she kept her son locked up, but it became too much for him. He ran away. One day, he returned with injuries from being attacked by rogues. He didn't survive.

Being alone really took a toll on Callista. There she was... Sitting at an empty table, all alone, talking to ghosts of her past. She reached a paw up and wiped her tears away.

"But, you'll come back, won't you...?"

"Mama, Mama!! It's the New Year's Eve!!"
Callista felt a tug on her tail. Rolling around, she opened her eyes to see her son staring at her with pleading eyes. "You promised we're gonna make Niangao!" her son said, wagging his tiny tail. His eyes were filled with excitement. Callista giggled. "Of course we are," she said, stroking her son on his tiny head in a loving way. "Now, why don't you wake Papa? I'm going to go to the market to get the ingredients we need." She picked up her son and hugged him, clutching him close to her fur. She nuzzled him and gave him a quick cuddle, then set him back onto the floor. "Run along now," she giggled. Her son let out a whoop of joy and skittered on his four paws, swerving to avoid a wall before calling out, "Papa! Papa!!"

Callista looked at herself in a mirror. Her long, reddish mane was a mess. Running her paws through her mane, her mane magically fixed itself. The strands of hair weaved themselves into intricate braids, and two small golden flowers set themselves on her hair. Smiling, she went out to the market. In the market, she saw many beautiful decorations hung on the sides of the roads. There were also beautiful lanterns of many different shapes. Callista bought some ingredients for making Niangao, and a small dragon lantern for her son. She knew how much he liked dragons.

When she got back, she saw their small house cleaned up and decorated. Her mate was there, sweeping the yard in front of the cottage and her son was hanging up red decorations. They waved at her when Callista came back, her arms loaded with grocery bags. "So, what do you think of the house, dear?" her mate asked, grabbing the bags from her to lighten the load.
"Mama! Papa and I have been busy decorating the house! What do you think?"
Callista giggled. She pulled both her mate and son into a hug. "It's wonderful."

The three went into the house and started making Niangao cakes. Callista tried her best to instruct them how to make proper Niangao cakes, but her mate and son were never good at cooking. It's the same every year: the kitchen never survived the mess. "Uh... Whoops," her mate chuckled, looking at a misshapen heap on a plate. Callista laughed. That evening, they sat together on the big dining table, eating Niangao and telling stories. "What's your wish for this year?" Callista asked her son.
"I wish... the townsfolk wouldn't be so scared of you and your powers! You're really nice, Mama!" he said, a bright smile on his face.
"Awww..." Callista cooed, stroking his head with a giggle.

After the feast, they went out to the tiny yard behind their cottage. Callista stretched her arms out. Energy balls shot out of her paws and burst into colorful lights in the dark sky above, creating wonderful shapes.
It was a wonderful memory. But now, that's all it is...

Just wonderful memories.

Callista gave a wistful sigh as her paws worked on making the Niangao. She made them as misshapen as possible. Still, she couldn't make them the way her mate and son used to make them. But, that's alright. When her mate comes back, she'd ask him how he made his Niangao. He'll come back one day, right? "Save me some food for when I come back, okay?" Her mate had said. Okay then. She'd make more Niangao, for her son, for her mate, and for her 'children', just in case.

凉爱春 - liáng ài chūn

Name:
凉爱春 (liáng ài chūn), is commonly called Ai.
Gender:
Female
⇐⇐⇐⇐⇐⇐⇐⇐⇐⇐⇐⇐⇐⇐⇐ | ⇒⇒⇒⇒⇒⇒⇒⇒⇒⇒⇒⇒⇒⇒⇒
Zodiac Sign:
Ai is born in the year of the dragon, and much like her Chinese Zodiac suggests, she is full of energy and can't tell lies to save her life. It's not that Ai can't lie, but rather she is painfully honest to a point where it is bluntness. She is a believer in honesty, and dislikes those who tell mistruths. She is a dreamer, and often times that leads her to make some interesting dishes with pineapples, chili peppers, and pistachios. Despite the terrible outcome of her failed combinations, she still remains very chipper and true to her Zodiac Sign. It's a question to others on how Ai can remain so energetic all the time, but she does have quiet moments when she sits and become deathly still, almost as though she's in a trance-like state. However, her brain on the inside would be whirling with new ideas to explore, and with enough patience and testing, often times those recipes are the ones that succeed. In a way, even though her body is calm, her mind would be working with Ai's endless amount of energy, and when she puts it to good use the energy would prove to be useful.
As Ai's birthday is on January 28th, on Chinese New Year, that makea the sprightly Viscet an Aquarius. However, her Dragon personality contradicts that of her Aquarius personality, because Aquarius Viscets are quieter and on the introverted side, Ai is more ambiverted, if not extroverted. Taking after of her Chinese Zodiac, there are things that Ai shares with her Aquarius side. Aquarius Viscets are also honest, and as a cook Ai is also creative with her dishes. When Ai is bored she is prone to laziness due to her Aquarius side, but she's usually motivated with a goal in mind.

Favourite Tradition:
There is nothing Ai loves more than cooking, but setting off fireworks at midnight on Chinese New Year is Ai's very favourite tradition. Because of how troublesome the fireworks are to her neighbours, Ai tries to only set them off at New Years, but when she does she buys boxes full of firecrackers and sets off as many as she can before dawn. The female Viscet is entranced by how the colours pop against the dark sky, and although the fireworks are loud, Ai's eyes glimmer every time at the sight of fireworks.
As a cook, Ai is well versed in chemistry and physics, and although she isn't able to make her own fireworks (gunpowder is hard to get ahold of), she is able to arrange the fireworks and change the temperature of the flames to create different patterns, often times in the shape of food. In her village the younger Visclings come up to her in hopes to see her complex fireworks, and because Ai can act so childish at times, she gladly shows them, and the Visclings are never disappointed, save for the ones who have already seen the fireworks many times already. However, there will always still be some shock and surprise that Ai can pull off a feat like that. After the fireworks, Ai would treat the Visclings to a bit of dumplings that she had just prepared before sending them on their way. When they have gone Ai would continue to set off her remaining fireworks and stay up until the last crackles of gunpowder fades away and the last wisps of smoke wafts away.
Ai had retained this habit since a close friend and foreigner, Yin, had showed her the delights in setting off fireworks. Since the other Viscet's passing, Ai has continued this tradition, and with each spark that crackles she remembers the friend that she had, and honours him with fireworks. On New Years it is a habit for Chinese Viscets to remember the dead by lighting candles and setting fire to incensed paper, but since Yin's grave wasn't in China, Ai would have to settle with firecrackers instead. Every year on this day there would be a silhouette that slightly resembles Yin that would approach her. Ai wasn't sure if that shape was the ghost of Yin, and she wasn't sure if that spirit felt any vengeance against her, for whatever reason. Because Ai was also superstitious, she would sprinkle alcohol over her and the shape would vanish.
Despite being used to being alone, Ai can't help but feel lonely at times. However, she would nibble on a piece of dried date whilst watching the night sky, and her sense of foreboding would instantly vanish. The food and the sound and sight of fireworks would calm her down, and with every pop Ai remembers that her life is still long, and that there will be more years to come where Ai would continue to cook and set off her beloved fireworks.

New Years Wish:
As a dreamy Viscet who walks the fine line between fantasy and reality, there are many wishes that Ai would make on New Years, despite knowing that most of them won't come true. However, her main wish would to have more inspiration regarding the new dishes that she would have to come up. Ai is a good chef and her imagination is unrivalled in the cooking industry, but like everyone else in the world she would experience times when she lack motivation and ideas. Ai is very extreme; she either has a load of ideas swirling in her head or none at all. There is no in between. Since so many traditional Chinese dishes exist, it would be hard to come up with one that tastes good as well, but Ai could do nothing but rise to the challenge.
There are many things that allow Ai to build off an already existing recipe into one of her own creations. She enjoys making use of the vast amount of chili peppers and green onions at her disposal, and those combinations often lead to spicy yet fragrant outcomes. Adding that combination to various meat stews, fish dishes, or anything regarding meat in particular, is not uncommon for Ai. There's just something about that extra little tang of spice on the tongue that leaves one yearning for more. She enjoys making use of ginger and cloves, and you'd never see Ai make a dish without at least one of the four ingredients mentioned above. She is a Viscet who specializes in savoury foods rather than sweet food.
There is a reason why Ai prefers making savoury foods. She is reminded of Yin by doing so, and some of her favourite dishes were savoury foods that she and Yin had collaborated on to perfect.
-----
"Ai! You handle the stove!" Yin shouted out, as Ai clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth as she bustled around the kitchen with her red and yellow apron. Holding a plate full of steaming mushrooms dipped in soy sauce with green onion lightly sprinkled on top, the female Viscet ducked out of the kitchen to place the plate on the table, smiling widely. Before she could open her mouth to speak, Yin poked his head out, waving a wok in irritation. "Ai, hurry up! We don't have all day, you know?"
Ai glared at the darker coloured Viscet before turning to the customer in front of her with another smile on her face. "Here's your food, sorry for the wait!" Turning around and rushing towards the kitchen, Ai shoved Yin out of the way, a frown darkening her face. "Would it have killed you to wait a little, perhaps? We're really busy for New Years, and as expected, we're severely understaffed."
"对不起," Yin commented, still holding the wok in the air. Handing it to Ai, he stepped aside, and let out a small whistle. "Is it always this busy around this time? New Years, I mean? I'm unfamiliar with your eastern traits and habits. Speaking of which, my Chinese is getting better, right? My rookie accent isn't showing, I believe."
Ai frowned, flipping over the fish on the frying pan before letting out a click of her tongue. "Your Chinese skills may be improving, but your skills for frying fish are still bad as ever. Ai might be able to get the charred parts off, though."
Yin didn't say anything in response, but simply nodded his head before glancing down at his paws. Clearing his throat, he gave Ai a small smile. "I'll end up improving eventually, trust me. Once I do, you won't be able to pick on my cooking skills anymore, you'll see."
"It's not called picking on your skills, but rather helping you improve," Ai said snidely before smiling as well. "Once you do, we'll be able to cook together and make the best, mouth-watering dishes the world has never seen before."

-----
There is nothing Ai an do now that Yin had passed into the oblivion. Instead, she continues to work hard on her recipes, hoping that one of them would be enough to sate the appetites of both she and Yin. While she cannot be sure of how Yin can taste her new dishes, Ai is confident that even though the two Viscets are separated, the male Viscet would find a way to taste the food. Among Ai's many flamboyant wishes, her wish for motivation to create new dishes for herself and Yin would take the first slot in priority. In order to maintain that small flickering flame of hope, Ai would continuously rub that small jade pendant that swings from her tail and simply hope for the best, because that's all she's able to do.
-----
"Are you able to hear Ai's wish, Yin?"

Extras:
"Ahh, Willow, that's unfair to Ai!" the female Viscet shouted out irritably, before slamming a paw down on the table. "You looked at the card! Do you seriously hate losing that much to the point where you'd cheat?"
"Shut it, Ai, that's my win," a dark blue Viscet grumbled, before pushing a stack of cards towards Ai, who had adopted a pouting face. The Viscet with long red fur tied into multiple braids had her arms crossed across her chest, and looked away from Willow. "Besides, why do you refer to yourself as 'Ai' and not 'I' or 'me'? That's so weird."
Reluctantly picking up the cards and adding them to her deck, Ai shuffled the cards in her paw before placing them down. "Ai fails to see how that's strange. One." Setting down a four of hearts, Ai leaned forward in anticipation, eyes focused solely on the card on the table in front of her. Willow rolls her eyes, before putting down a ten of clubs. Running a paw through her fur, Willow's eyes narrowed as well.
"Two," Willow said, as Ai let out a hum of dissent. Shifting around in her seat, Ai let out a yelp of surprise as the kettle sounded. Willow exhaled slowly from her nose, before waving her paw at Ai, motioning for the other female Viscet to go. "Go deal with the kettle. Don't force yourself to take care of me just because I dropped by. Your main priority should still be yourself and your restaurant."
"That won't do, Ai won't be satisfied!" Ai snapped, removing the kettle from the stove before hurrying back towards Willow and their game of Slapjack. Sitting back down, the Viscet with red braids sat down and flicked her hair behind her back. "This is tradition, you can't expect Ai to break something like tradition, Willow. What you're asking of Ai is selfish. Learn to be more humble and let me take care of you for the time being. After all, your parents, Nabi and Ligonem, entrusted you to Ai." Letting out a small hum and closing her eyes, the red furred Viscet rested a paw on her deck of cards. "Three." Setting down a seven of spades, Ai leaned back.
"It's not a matter of being selfish or not." Running a paw through her darkly coloured fur, Willow let out a small cough. "Ah, I'm bored of playing cards. Do you mind if we do something else, like drink tea or watch you cook? I don't think this can be counted as an act of selfishness, can it?" Shaking her head incredulously, the dark blue Viscet lowered her head. "Crazy Asians."
Clicking her tongue, Ai frowned. "Aiya, how rude! Ai is not crazy, and neither is your mother! Nabi is born in Korea, and Korea is an Asian country, you realize?" Hurrying over to the kettle, the Viscet poured the water into a teapot, and the tea leaves that were sitting in the bottom of the pot floated up. "Have some tea, Willow. You might as well, since Ai doesn't want to get up and get anything else."
Raising a paw to gently brush the horns on her head, Willow winced. "Fine, then. How's your restaurant doing? Are you still setting off those silly fireworks?"
"Ai does not think that her fireworks are silly. But yes, Ai is still playing with them, and the restaurant is doing fine." Falling silent, Ai's eyes clouded. "That's all Ai has left of Yin, so Ai would like to treasure her fireworks and restaurant as much as possible."
