Food poem:
Hey, dude!
What'd you got there, food?
I can't help but see
That plate of mashed potatoes, carrots, and peas
Thanksgiving already? No, it has passed!
Christmas maybe? No, that went by fast!
It's just a regular day! And you have this huge meal?
What if I wash the dishes after for some, deal?
A home cooked feast and it's not even a holiday
Oh! Seconds, please, if I may?
This is amazing food, from the turkey to the honeycomb
With a full belly like this, I'd call this my home.
How to choose from all these?
From the biggest turkey to the smallest pea
But what is my favourite? Can I only choose one?
Well I'd have to say icing, it's just so fun!
Green, yellow, pink, and blue
Purple, orange, and red, too!
So many colours, like edible paint!
Like a painting in your mouth, right, mate?
I'll decorate the cake to be a masterpiece
Then eat it all up, and my belly will increase!
Oh icing, so sweet and underrated!
Forgotten and shadowed by the cake but it just makes me elated
To lick it all up and eat with my eyes
If the colours were gone, you'd hear my cries!
Oh yes the colours, that inspire me so!
They give me ideas for dream catchers, now you know!
This is how I know what to make
Keep my secret, never break
You promise, my friend? To keep this between us?
Thank you, my friend, for not making a fuss.
Occupation: Even though there's nothing he loves more than eating food, preparing it isn't much of an interest for him. Sure, it was cool to see where all the inticing food actually came from, but for him it just didn't compare to the part where you eat it. In fact, his favourite part of cooking, if he has to do it, is taste-testing!
But Jeshiro does have a different passion. After a huge dinner when he can barely move, he loves to snuggle up on the couch with his tuxedo cat and do what he thinks is the most relaxing and satisfying activity. Making dream catchers! Just like how the end result of cooking is the best part, the end result of making dream catchers is pretty cool too! He loves to watch his fingers turn some string and feathers into a finished masterpiece. His bedroom is absolutely covered in them, so much so that if you walk in and turn on the light, you won't notice much of a difference. The dream catchers, like a forest canopy blot of the sunny ceiling light. He doesn't mind though, darkness doesn't bother him anymore.
Jeshiro started making dream catchers as a result of always fleeing to his parents' bed in the middle of the night, escaping the monsters that were close to eating him. The nightmares became a big problem and to calm him, his mother showed him the art of making dream catchers, which filter out the bad dreams and only allow the good.
Jeshiro had been immensely curious about how the dream catchers were made, but his mom thought he was too young to learn it yet. After all, he was just a little Kalon kit at the time. So, Jeshiro figured it out himself. With his young, curious mind he examined the thing day in and day out, trying over and over until he finally got it to work. He didn't mind how long it took, he had all the time in the world! Being too young for school, he spent long days at home.
When he showed his mom, she was astonished, and told him she was very proud. Her encouragement lit a burning desire within him and unearthed his passion. Today, he sells the dream catchers he makes at the harbour where all the street artists and rock, ahem sorry gem collectors, show off their work. It feels a bit funny to be working his stand next to Kalons who sell green gravel as precious emeralds and street artists who should get paid more, but he is happy here. Plus it doesn't hurt that he loves watching the seals pop their heads out from the water to stare at the Kalons passing by.
There is one dream catcher that he will never, ever sell. That first one that he made, all by himself, that made his mother proud, which made him discover this passion. This dream catcher, though it's strings are worn and it's feathers tattered, is more valuable than all the dream catchers he's ever made combined. He sleeps with it hanging directly over his head, letting in only the good dreams. His reliable dream catcher never fails to make him feel safe.
Nickname: Despite his coat of green and brown being not so similar to the classic purple and pink colours or even the more modern silver and blue markings of the Cheshire Cat, it has quickly become Jeshiro's nickname. His best friend has always fumbled with his name and to simplify it, just called him Jeshire. Jeshiro couldn't understand why it was so hard to pronounce the "o" at the end of it, but being the easy-going guy that he is he had no problem with it.
Jeshire very quickly transformed into Cheshire, and the name stuck. His friends call him Jeshiro, but you can always tell who's his best friend when you hear them calling him after a cartoon feline. The fact that he's relatable to the chubby kitty's clear history of a love for food is a bonus.
Personality: Jeshiro is one of the chilliest, most laid-back Kalons you'll ever meet. He's optimistic, but not overly bubbly, and loves to talk but isn't a chatter mouth. He's the guy you go to if you need to get something off your chest and need someone who won't tell your secret to another soul. Jeshiro treats others' values like his own, always honouring them and never intentionally disrespecting them. He's very open minded and accepting of all types of Kalons.
Jeshiro isn't one to get mad easily. The worst he can get is angrily but quietly slinking back into his dark room to twirl his fingers round some string and make a dream catcher. For some reason others find it frustrating how he can stay so cool-minded and not blow up at people, and going through school the bigger Kalons always challenged that. But his mother would coo to him when he got home and teach him about how life works and how some Kalons might be going through some tough stages in their lives. And if she wasn't there, a roll of string and a clump of feathers always was.
For Christmas, his birthday, and any other holiday, Jeshiro always gets supplies for crafting his passion. Others find it difficult to see how he gets enjoyment from such cheap, simple things but the colourful feathers and shiny beads are as precious to him as the newest iPhone or fastest MacBook is to a tech nerd.
Favourite hobby: Other than the obvious choice of creating dream catchers, Jeshiro has another favourite hobby that he can't get enough of. Jeshiro is in love with camping. Coming from Native ancestry, he always loves to go back to his roots and gather round a campfire while listening to the elders share stories of how the earth came to be, with stories of Raven being a troublemaker as always and the great salmon run providing for all creatures. The stories swirl around him and twirl him down into a net, just like the spiralling pattern of a dream catcher, which originated from his Native background.
Jeshiro is often caught between the city and the forest, and tries to spend lots of time in the woods but can never pull himself away from the draw of that harbour where he sells his work. Standing around all day next to a salty harbour may not sound all the great, but it's just as much his passion as the actual creating of the dream catchers. He loves to see how each Kalon has their own preference of colours, beads, and spiral shape. It's interesting to see how different everyone is, and how personally connected they feel to a certain dream catcher. If you ask him, he will show you how to make one yourself. He'll give you the supplies and make one beside you, showing you step-by-step and personalizing it to your favourite style. Finally, he'd give you the finished product, and you'd get to keep the one he made as well as the supplies he made it with at no cost. Even though technically he should charge more for the lesson, he gives it, and the dream catcher, to them for free since he feels like the happiness and fun experience he gained from it is payment already. The gem collectors always shook their heads at him, telling him he'll go out of business that way. After all, he was pretty much making more competition for himself. But he didn't mind. He would just think back to that night when his mom was so proud of him for making that dream catcher, and he's reassured that spreading this passion to as many Kalons as he can would make him the happiest Kalon on earth.
