Nevermore didn’t know what he was doing here. His two best friends had just shown up at his door and dragged him to the car. He swore he was going to kill them for this. Really this time.
Karolina and Karlie had brought him to the local Pride Parade. On the way here Karlie had painted a sun on his cheek in rainbow colors. She’d asked if he wanted her to paint the genderfluid flag, or any other flag, as well, but he’d decided not to. He didn’t want to get into all that with random people he just met.
He should have been happy to be here. And he was happy. He was happy they got to celebrate who they were out in the open like this. But he just wasn’t a party person. That was more Kara’s thing.
The music from the floats was loud and everyone was out in full, colorful force. There was every color combination imaginable, and even spots of grey and black amidst the riotous mosaic. The girl next to him was weighed down with shiny mardi gras style beads, a demisexual flag painted on her cheek. The little kids behind them wore tye dye shirts and cute heart shaped glasses. They excitedly waved rainbow flags as they jumped up and down, keeping an eye out for candy. There were also three men in front of him and his friends wearing nothing but shorts and huge rainbow feathered wings. Between that and the vibrant floats, Nevermore couldn’t say the view was unappealing, but he still didn’t think this was his scene.
“Come on, Nev!” Kara shouted to him above the music and cheering of the crowd, fingers circling his wrist.
“I’m good, Kara,” he said, dragging his feet as she pulled him closer.
“Come on, live a little. You know you’ll like it,” they laughed.
“Yeah, Nev! Don’t be a butt.” Karlie bumped her hip against his.
Grumbling, with a put upon sigh, he started swaying to the music next to them. Really he wasn’t as miserable as he acted. He loved spending time with his friends. Kara grabbed his paw, swinging their arms as they danced. He lifted their paws to send Kara into a twirl.
He shouted alongside his friends as a float sporting the transgender flag rolled past. Karlie was jumping up and down as she cheered, and Nev swore even the people on the other side of the street could pick out her voice above the crowd’s. She jumped and gave one final spin, smile wide enough to split her face. Watching her, Nev was struck by how amazing his friend was all over again; he didn’t think he’d met anyone more optimistic and energetic in his life. When she landed Nevermore threw his arm around her shoulders and dragged her into a hug. Karolina wrapped their arm around Karlie’s waist from her other side. Without speaking they both leaned in and left noisy kisses on their friend’s cheeks. Karlie blushed and giggled between them.
They continued to watch the parade and Nev joined in with their dancing. He got really into it when a float started playing “Cool for the Summer.” He didn’t go clubbing as much as Kara did, but he still had some moves.
The end of the parade eventually came. The last part of the parade was a group of people carrying a huge rainbow flag. It was as wide as the street and, Nev swore, a block long.
With a final cheer the onlookers began to leave. As they joined the crush of people, Karlie insisted Nev give her a piggy back ride through the crowds. With a snort he let her hop on his back. The three of them waded through the sea of people towards the park. Their plan had been to hang out there for the rest of the afternoon until Karolina’s favorite club Rainbow Lights opened at six. The crowd thinned a little as they entered the park, but they weren’t the only ones to have this idea. Kara picked a path and led them, still weaving between groups of people, on a search for ice cream. They hung out at this park a lot and knew the ice cream truck liked to set up their truck on the West corner of the park.
Nev finally put Karlie down when they found Tammi’s ice cream truck. Karlie got a cone of strawberry and he and Kara got mint chocolate chip. The three of them asked to have their cones basically drown in rainbow sprinkles.
They left the truck, happily licking their treats, and found a place in the grass to sit. The sun was quickly melting Nevermore’s ice cream so he took a huge bite out of the top.
“Ooh, how can you do that!” Karlie said, shaking herself like she was brushing off something unpleasant.
“What? It was melting.”
“But you have to savor it!” Karolina said.
“And it’s cold,” Karlie chimed in.
Nevermore took another huge bite of his ice cream. He smirked at Kara and wiggled his eyebrows.
“Oh god. Nev! Don’t do that!” Karlie squealed.
“Heathen.”
Nev laughed and stuck his tongue out at them. After he finished his ice cream he laid back in the grass and closed his eyes. The sun was warm on his face and there was just a slight breeze. Perfect weather. He let Karolina and Karlie’s voices wash over him as they talked about all the floats the groups that had been in the parade. This was nice.
Around four they got up and found a cafe for dinner. Nevermore couldn’t decide for the longest time what sandwich to get: did he go with the one with turkey and apple slices or the one with avocado? In the end he made Karlie pick for him. It was while they were eating their food that Nev felt their gender shift. Their gender changed somewhat frequently, most often day to day but sometimes it shifted after only a few hours. They’d only gone silent a few moments while Karlie and Karolina had continued the conversation.
“Nev, help me out here. The ace float was the best one this year,” Karlie said.
“Obviously it was the transgender pride float. And can we use they/them pronouns for the rest of the night?”
“Sure.”
“Yep.”
“Thanks guys.”
His friends had always accepted him for who he was. They’d always supported him, which was better than he could say for some people when he’d told them he was genderfluid.
After dinner they walked through downtown until they got to Rainbow Lights.
Once they were in the club, Karolina grabbed their paws and wasted no time dragging them to the dance floor. Karlie and Karolina spun wildly beneath the flashing lights. Nev found themself dancing with them, their paws on Karlie’s hips one moment, facing off with Kara the next. The music was mostly electronic with a few pop songs thrown in. They didn’t normally like electronic music, but here, they found it was okay. They lost themself to the beat of the music for a while. There was just their paws on Kara’s hips as they danced, watching Karlie jumped and twist around them, and throwing their paws high beneath the flashing lights. Today had been a really good day. Nevermore had given their friends a hard time for dragging them out this morning, but it had turned into a great day. Any time spent with Nev’s friends was great. Karolina and Karlie were their best friends, they cared for Nev and always knew how to make them feel comfortable and have fun, and they loved them for that.
