❣ beginnings;; ❝It was the crack of dawn, and everyone on an odd ranch in the middle of nowhere was sleeping. Well, everyone but a peculiar little girl. Frizzy, loose ringlets framed her face, but her enthusiastic brown eyes stole the spotlight. Today was her birthday, and her father had planned a surprise for her. With a big leap, she hurled out of bed and ran to her parent’s bedroom. She screamed with excitement and jumped at the edge of the bed, her curls flying in the air. “Joanna, calm down,” her father chuckled before getting up. His wife was already awake, strangely, and was tending to their small okra garden.
After big meal of homemade pancakes shaped like cats, Joanna and her father headed outside to the old barn. Sure it was beat up and was covered in cobwebs, but the family loved the place. Her father soon took out a handkerchief and covered Joanna’s eye with it. “Stay right here, and don’t move,” he told her and headed out the backdoor. The little girl yelped with excitement, making a couple of the horses turn their heads towards her.
A couple of minutes later the door opened, and Joanna’s father and mother stood next to her with a new member of the family. “You can open your eyes now,” her mother cooed with a hint of joy in her voice. Joanna pulled down the blindfold and gaped at what she saw in front of her.❞

History -- As a young calf, Percival was out to pasture with his herd, grazing with his mother on a dark overcast day. The herders were keeping watch but did not notice that the overcast was becoming more ominous and shaping itself into a thunderstorm. The sky opened up and the rain pelted down on the herd and their cowboys, and at the first sound of thunder the herd was spooked and began to scatter. Poor Percival was terrified and tried to keep up with his mother but the chaos around him was too much. The cowboys were trying their best to gather up the herd but poor Percival had ran off in the wrong direction. He was so distraught with fright and cried for his mother but his cries were drowned out by the heavy rain and thunder. And before he knew it, his little legs had carried him far far away from the herd, and he was lost.
The storm carried on for what felt like forever, and Percival began to loose all hope of ever finding his mother again as he trudged through the puddles of mud in search of his herd. As the sun began to shine through the storm as it subsided, the calf looked up to see on the end of the horizon, a barn. Surely they must know where his herd had gone! He ran as fast as his hooves could carry them, all the while nearly stumbling over the tall grass and getting stuck in more mud, but he was determined to find his way back home.
When he came there, he noticed there was hardly any livestock, only a few roaming chickens. But he did not give up hope. A small house was behind the barn and he wandered up to it, calling again, this time to see if anyone was around. A small boy heard the call from inside the house and ran out to see what it was, only to find a small calf standing before him. He called to his mother but didn't get a reply at first, and so he proceeded to approach the calf. The boy held out his hand for Percival to sniff and was greeted with a big lick from his tongue. The boy's mother came out to see what was the matter and found the two interacting. "Now how did he get here?" She asked in astonishment, trying to sound stern, but her heart was practically melting. "I guess the storm blew him in, he must have lost his herd." The boy said as he gave the calf a pat on his head. "His herd must not be too far then..." The mother was starting to say but saw a look in her son's eyes that showed the sure-sign of heartbreak. "Now, Arthur, you know we had to sell the other cows because we had to keep up with the house. What good is he gonna be if he can't produce any milk?" And there it was, pure, unfiltered, heartbreak now in both sets of eyes looking at her. She didn't receive a reply and gave a heavy sigh. "If you can prove to be responsible enough to raise him, he's yours. But if you neglect him, we will have to get rid of him too." She bargained and the boy practically hugged the life out of the calf in joy. "Your father is gonna be livid about this when he comes home."
The boy waited until his mother was gone before he pet the calf's head gently "Now what shall we name you... Oh! I have an idea! You shall be one of the knights of the round table! One of my loyal companions!" Arthur says as he is quick to find a fallen stick that's about the length of a sword. He returns to the calf who has sat down to watch him and 'knights' him with the stick "Sir Percival."
And from that moment on, Arthur and Percival were inseparable.
Short Story -- Percival Finds the Holy Grail
"Cmon, Percival! You can come out now, the storm is gone!" Arthur calls from outside the barn. When the calf doesn't come running, he sets out to look for him. "Now, cmon! There isn't anymore thunder." The boy promises as he heads into the barn and begins to search in the stalls until he comes across one that had a small brown and white lump of fur hiding in the corner. "Hey, its okay." The boy says as he approaches the calf and sits down in the stall beside him, petting the calf's fur. "It's so sunny and bright now, I don't think it will storm again anytime soon. It's the perfect weather for adventuring!" He tried to encourage the little bull.
Percival looked up at his companion and then rested his head in the boy's lap. His whole body was shaking as he was still very much frightened of bad storms. But his ears perked up at the word 'adventuring'.
"That's right! Today we are going to be searching for the holy grail! Mom and Dad are gone and so you and I can do all the adventuring we would like!" He exclaims before leaning into the calf's ear "I will even let you into the house. Just don't break anything, okay?"
At this, the calf practically jumped to his feet and started off out of the stall and barn and towards the front door of the house. Arthur laughed at the calf's excitement and was quick to follow.
And so they set off to find the holy grail. The two searched through the indoors of the house and were both careful not to break anything. After searching far and wide, they gave up and came back outside of the house with no luck. "Looks like the grail is harder to find than we expect..." Arthur said to his bull companion before finding he wasn't by his side. He looked back towards the side of the barn where he was now stood, drinking water from a bucket. Arthur grinned upon further inspection to see that the bucket was still labelled what he wrote on in chalk: 'Holy Grail'.
"Well," The boy said as he approached the bull and patted his back as reward, "Looks like you found it after all!"
