xxxxxfirst off the bat, delaine is very, very shy -- the fact that she's a selective mute doesn't help her awkwardness, either. she comes off as either very rude (as she won't respond, and how are people supposed to know about her?) or just plain strange. when she's got someone around to introduce her and "vouch for her", it's a slightly different story, but she's still quite timid. she fears messing up in front of people.
xxxxxdelaine is sort of a downer. she believes that the world is usually a pretty bad place, and while she hopes for the better, she feels like ever since a certain incident, nothing good can happen without bad things overriding them. laine is very jumpy, too. she seems like she's always on edge, even if everything around her is calm. she worries too much, and spends too much time wrapped up on her fears rather than the good things in life.
xxxxxwhile she's a debbie downer, delaine is also a hopeless romantic. she loves the idea of being swept off her feet by some gorgeous stranger... but she knows it wouldn't ever happen, which leaves her sadder than before.
xxxxxdelaine sounds like a depressing person to be around, but that's not always the case. when she's with close friends and family, she's actually fairly nice. (although, her silence can be a roadblock.) she's a sweet plumerian, she's just a bit scared and hopeless sometimes.

xxxxx❥ delaine is a selective mute. she can talk, and she does so when she feels one-hundred-percent comfortable, but she honestly can't when she's not. she freezes up and panics. it all stems from her insecurities and shyness.

xxxxxdelaine's earliest years were quiet, calm, and loving. while her father was away a lot of the time -- being the captain of a boat -- her mother stayed at home and took care of the kids. with her older brother ace around, days were always lively and full of fun. it was a perfect childhood, in all essence. delaine couldn't have asked for more.
xxxxxwhile home was always a safe haven of sorts, school wasn't. delaine always felt anxious around so many other people. she found herself frozen in fear whenever someone tried striking up a conversation with her -- she could never reply to them, no matter how much she wanted to. even the teachers and other faculty scared her senseless. because of this, she didn't talk very much. she'd mumble answers occasionally, and verbally respond to yes or no questions. because of this, she got teased by her classmates for being so awkward and quiet.
xxxxxeventually, delaine got to the point where she couldn't even muster up a single word in school. she'd be paralyzed -- too afraid to even let out a single sound. no matter what kind of help was offered, laine couldn't manage to overcome her selective mutism. she'd only talk at home and around very close friends.
xxxxxtime passed, and delaine became a bit more comfortable around people. she could "interact", sure, and point things out or nod her head, but she still couldn't talk without freaking out. interactions were made easier, though, once the journal happened. (it'll be elaborated on later.) the first journal laine got was from ace, partially as a joke: he laughed, telling her that she could just write down what she wanted to say. needless to say, that's what she ended up doing.
xxxxxaside from her struggles with anxiety and talking in front of people, delaine has had a good life so far. she's got a family that cares for her, and she finds solace and comfort when she needs it. she's found her life to be fairly normal: she's still in school, and she works part-time restocking shelves at the local library. despite her problems, laine carries on just like everyone else.

❥ hobbies
xxxxxlaine is honestly a pretty boring person, when it gets down to the bottom of it. most of the things she likes doing can be done right in the comfort of her own home -- such as scribbling down stuff in her journal and reading. delaine is kind of a book snob, and usually has awfully harsh criticism, including rants about "bad excuses for young adult dystopian fiction" and "plot bunnies". while she's usually cooped up, delaine does like to spend a little time outside, and often tries feeding the birds at the nearby park. it never quite works out the way she wants it to, though. she's also tried gardening, which was a disaster. she does like looking at flowers, though, and has a deep appreciation for those with a green thumb.

xxxxxdelaine works at the local library. she mostly just restocks shelves (and points to the info desk when people need help), alongside other non-verbal stuff like cleaning up. it doesn't pay too much, and it's a bit boring and slow-paced, but she actually likes it a lot. for her, it's almost calming to slide books back where they belong, right into where they fit.

xxxxxa page falls out of the girl's journal. it looks at though it's been flipped to many times -- it's covered in smudges, a tad bit wrinkled, and slightly torn towards the end.
xxxxx"every night, it's the same dream. i don't know if i want to have it or not, but no matter how much i try to forget it, it comes back. what does that even say about me? regardless, here it goes:
xxxxxi'm in the middle of the woods, surrounded by trees. they form a beautiful canopy of leaves overhead, but i'm in a sunny patch of ground -- speckles of sunlight pour in from the sky. i'm laying on the forest floor, grass and flowers surrounding me, just... existing. nothing more. time drones on and i remain there, perfectly still, in the forest. it almost feels like years tick past.
xxxxxflowers grow over my body, and moss moves up and down on my chest with every breath. roots wrap around my legs, and the tallest of trees sprout over my being. every fiber of my existence is covered in plants. i become the forest.
xxxxxand then, i try to move.
xxxxxeverything that i've let grow over me so peacefully strains against me as i try to rip my way through the ground. i feel that i can't breathe anymore. gnarled, tangled roots block my path to sunshine, the darkness of the dirt covers my eyes. i struggle, but i need to get up. i've got to breathe again -- i can't just let the world go on without me. i decide that i matter.

❥ the journal
xxxxxdelaine usually carries around a small notebook. (it can vary in color, since she'll fill one up and have to grab a new one, but she likes brown ones, since they're low-profile.) its pages are simply full of stuff.
xxxxxlaine scribbles down quick notes to herself in her little book. "remember laundry," she'll write, or "empty dishwasher". for someone who's as much of a trainwreck as she is, this can prove itself to be quite helpful.
xxxxxthis is also a somewhat easier way of communication for her. some pages are full of one-sided conversations, explaining that she "can't" talk, and asking for help in some way. this can make things a little complicated, since it takes a minute to write something down, but it does help her interact with people. (although, occasionally, she will squeak out a verbal "thank you". she's trying her best.)
xxxxxsome pages have the word "quotes" scrawled carelessly at the top, and then have little inspirational sayings underneath them -- some credited with a speaker, and some with a couple question marks next to them. delaine is obsessed with quotes: many of them are uplifting, and for someone who doesn't have anything to say, she finds it interesting to look at the words of others. her favorites are usually corny walt disney or dr. seuss ones.
xxxxxhowever, most importantly, pages and pages are filled with small doodles of events that happened in dreams, summaries of the vivid realities that sweep through her mind at night, and, of course... the why is always written down. delaine believes that there's no such thing as a meaningless dream -- they all say something about the person who dreamed them up.
xxxxxbecause of this, she's left in a constant state of confusion. it's easy to tell that some dreams are made of pure happiness, longing, and/or lust, but... no matter how hard she tries, she just can't figure out what her dreams are trying to tell her. her "overgrowth dream", as she calls it, drives her insane.

xxxxxace is delaine's older brother. the two look nothing alike -- he's very pale and incredibly tall, while laine is short and has a somewhat darker complexion -- so seeing them claim to be related can be a little strange. the two get along pretty well, too. ace usually understands how laine's feeling just by looking at her, so whenever they're together, he "translates" for her. ace, being loud and slightly obnoxious, will crack jokes about poor delaine, but he really does care about her. he wants his shy little sister to overcome her fear of talking to people, and will support her no matter what. laine responds negatively to this -- she doesn't want him to worry about her or even bother trying to "help" her. other than that, though, they're pretty chill and supportive of each other.

xxxxxdelaine and dolly don't know each other too well -- in fact, dolly probably doesn't even know that the quiet plumerian even exists -- but delaine has a great respect for her. dolly is everything that delaine envies. she's a free spirit, a powerhouse, a strong person. she's confident in herself, to boot! delaine wishes that she could be more like that, and less of a wimp.

xxxxxquite frankly, delaine is scared of meredith and siren. she knows them as one loud, overbearing, terrifying unit. they hang around with her brother, and every time she sees them, they're up to no good. (some of what they say makes her laugh a little, but a lot of it is way too much for her.) delaine knows that they're lovely people deep down, but siren's wisecracking, lewd jokes and meredith's booming laughter can be overwhelming.

xxxxxdelaine and buddy met at the library. the hyper little plumerian (a.k.a. the antitheses of who should be in a library) was bouncing around, trying to find something (although, who knows what?) when he crashed into delaine and sent her, as well as several books, flying. she shrugged it off and gave buddy a reassuring pat on the back, but the self-proclaimed "happiness helper" wouldn't give up there. he spent the rest of the day trying to help her out. since she doesn't get treaty kindly by too many people, this was a surprise. the two of them became friends, in a way, and whenever he stops by the library, she makes sure to send a smile and a wave his way.

xxxxxalternate title: the time laine almost died.
xxxxxit was a blisteringly hot day outside. the late summer sun hung above the world, beams of heat brutally slamming into the ground. people were suffering -- it was that hot out. naturally, delaine was inside.
xxxxxshe wasn't alone, though. ace's friends had ditched him to go to the beach (without inviting him, of course), and he was hanging around. while laine was perfectly content sitting inside and reading a book or catching up on tv, ace was not. she noticed that he was itching to do something, even if it meant that the two of them were going to be dehydrated and exhausted.
xxxxx"hey, delaine," said ace, peeking his head through laine's bedroom door as she scribbled in her journal. "you wanna go get some ice cream or something?"
xxxxxshe sighed. "ace, it's hot out. i don't think i can handle that." her nasally, high-pitched voice sounded awkward and stale. "but... i guess so. nothing better to do."
xxxxxace laughed, and swung the door open. "no need to be so stoic, kiddo. you can't fool me -- you're just as restless as i am!" she started to protest, but ace cut her off. "let's go!"

xxxxxdelaine blankly gazed out the window of the passenger seat while ace blasted his terrible music. whenever he sang along, it made things even worse, although laine did laugh at it a little. when they rolled up in the parking lot, she felt herself tense up a bit.
xxxxxgetting to the window of the ice cream place, ace stopped to think. "okay, so, i think we're both gonna get mediums. i just want a chocolate cone. how 'bout you, delaine?" he smiled at her, waiting for her to pull out the dinky little journal she always wrote in. after all, he had no idea what she wanted.
xxxxxdelaine rummaged around in her bag, trying to find it. i put it in, right? she thought to herself. quickly shuffling through every pocket, a wave of fear rushed over her. it was nearly paralyzing to face the truth of the situation.
xxxxxshe didn't have her journal.
xxxxxlaine suddenly froze. she knew what she had to do -- talk. but she couldn't. she'd stutter, or mess up in some other way, and she'd be a burden. but, would standing around make it even worse? did she have to do this? or, perhaps there was some way to get ace to say it... but, how was he supposed to know what she wanted? oh, why didn't she grab it?
xxxxxand, as the world ticked to a complete stop...
xxxxx"vanilla..." she croaked out quietly.
xxxxxthe woman working the counter gave the two a weird look, but ace was overjoyed. as they waited for their ice cream, he immediately freaked out. "laine, you did it! you talked to someone! it was just a word, but it was a huge step!" when they were handed their ice cream, delaine immediately rushed off to the car -- she needed to get away.
xxxxxslamming the door to the passenger seat, delaine let out an exasperated sigh. "ace, i left my journal at home! i... i-i couldn't... i felt like i might..."
xxxxxace patted her on the back. "hey, man, that's life. get used to it." she made a face at him, and he laughed. "either way, we gotta call mom, she's gonna love this. you did great, kiddo."
xxxxxdelaine took a satisfying lick of her ice cream. maybe she didn't do great... but she sure did something.

the eager audience before him.. it was near heaven
for london. for many nights of many years he had
dreamed of something like this. being a mute and
having the aspirations to become a brilliant actor had
always conflicted with each other until he had the
dream to go out and do it anyways ! he had stood
before an audience upon which his voice (which was
only possible in such dreams) fell upon.. well, deaf
ears. it was then that he realized that he could use
what he had to provide entertainment for those who
may not have had the ability before to enjoy such
things. he would dance and speak through his hands,
with body language and lyrics understood by those
who cared to watch.

he dreamt of stars and moonlight.

everything not washed in the brilliantly radiant glow was beautifully silhouetted against the obsidian darkness surrounding
him. as he turned his face upward, towards the heavens in all their lovely splendor, the silvery light revealed his pleasant
face. his pelt was swirled with the colors of a summer forest, and his sapphire eyes had a glassy, weary glint to them. in
them reflected the tiny pinpricks of light in the sky.. it was as if someone had finely crushed glass and scattered their
glittering, splintered remains across the vast expanse of darkess above, reaching in endless directions everywhere. such
beauty, and yet.. so much mystery. nobody knew what may lie ahead, no matter how much he wanted to reassure himself
that he would do well and prosper and help others with his previous dreams.. he felt a shudder travel his spine as he tilted
his head back down to rest softly on his paws, eyelids drooping. so beautiful, so much to learn.. yet drowsiness was taking
its toll. he exhaled.. asleep.

fetta has always been one of london's favorite plumes to work with
because of her bouncy, bubbly attitude. he admires her enthusiasm
and creativity for his passion, and has always wanted to get to know
her a little more than just through the theatre. he loves giving her
advice and tips and receiving the same from her, and thinks of her
like a bright ray of sunshine on a rainy day.

farin | helps with scripts | master of nothing
london admires farin's way of speaking of a character as it they were
real, as it ties in with how one may portray a certain persona. he doesn't
much mind his frequent getting into arguments, as his creativity most
certainly makes up for it. he also appreciates his ability to know when
to joke and to be serious, although a mixture of both always makes
for terrific scripts, which is definitely invigorating for him.

tarquin | costume crew | merraki
as far as uniqueness goes, tarquin is certainly one of the most unique
plumies that london has ever had the pleasure of working with. each
costume he makes, london falls absolutely head over heels with and
makes sure to show his appreciation for all tarquin's hard work by
doing things such as buying him coffee, breakfast, or lunch, and even
teaching him sign language so that their communication can be
heightened.

talia | stage manager | slightly sad oatmeal
talia is a wonderful stage manager and london is so very glad that
he had the opportunity to have her work with him and his crew.

OCCUPATION

Vera works as an artist, and has her own stall to sell her drawings. The company she works with does all the prints and merchandise, but Vera keeps the original. Vera can draw a few drawings a day, since she stays indoors so much. Vera earns quite a bit of money from this, and much more than other artists, so she’s not financially struggling too much.

PERSONALITY
Vera is awfully quiet and shy. She suffers from social anxiety and PTSD, and it's not hard for her to manage a whole day without talking at all. Vera has a lot of trouble even just leaving the house, or picking up phone calls from others, and plumerians who don't know her think she's anti-social and hates everyone. It breaks Vera's heart, and a lot of the time she reacts to statements like those by crying for longer than ten minutes. Vera always believes that she is hopeless, and that there would be no way that she would get over her "dumb" fear. Vera has been diagnosed of social anxiety since she was 14.
But underneath all the fear, underneath all the anxiousness lies the true Vera, before she diagnosed. Vera was still shy and quiet, but she was a sweet and happy girl who wanted to help everybody. She would be so generous, so giving to others and it wasn't uncommon for her to sacrifice her precious time to assist somebody else. Vera would always go to school with a smile, and she couldn't wait to say a big hello to her friends. Vera seemed to love everything, and she would always manage to make a terrible disaster into something more positive and better.
Vera would be a little careless at times, and she wouldn't know what she was falling into before realising what was going on. By the time she got it, it would usually be too late. Vera would overload herself with responsibilities, finding herself responsible for a lot things and she might even end up rushing what she was doing. However,

Vera would always pull through, and considering what kinds of things she had to do, it would seem like a miracle that she managed.

HOBBIES
Vera’s main hobby is art. She loves drawing, and it’s really the only way for her to get all her thoughts on paper comfortably. Vera’s been drawing since she was only seven, and has a ton of experience under her belt. Art is basically her life, and if she didn’t get into art, Vera would struggle so much more than she is struggling today.
Vera also loves just listening to music and drinking a cup of hot chocolate. Several times she does both, and just has a long time of peace and music by herself. These sessions might go on for five minutes, or maybe for even two hours. It’s really how stressed out Vera is on the day, and the more stressed she is, the longer her peaceful moment lasts.

HISTORY
Vera had a nice childhood for a while. Up until she started suffering her mental illness, she always looked up to the world and see it as a happy place, and not care society said. While she grew up, she did care a little bit, but it wasn’t enough to shift her at all. Vera’s parents were smiling because they had such a lovely daughter, and Vera had tons of friends. What could possibly go wrong?
A month after Vera’s fourteenth birthday, her life was flipped upside down. A group of bullies began picking on Vera, and while this didn’t bother Vera all too much, she was shocked and changed. They kept teasing and laughing at Vera, making fun of absolutely everything, from her quietness to her appearance to how giving she was. Vera felt a bit more hopeless as days went by, but the real damage was done when the bullies began hitting Vera physically, abusing her on the worst days. Vera would have more and more bruises each day, until she was forced to go tell the principal about what happened. The bullies were stopped and were expelled, but by then, Vera was already beginning to suffer. She first started suffering depression, but it quickly faded away and lead to social anxiety as rumours passed around. Unable to handle the insaneness, Vera isolated herself, losing friends on purpose and talked even more less. Her parents kept trying to help Vera, but it did more harm than good.
Eventually, Vera finally moved out of the house when she turned 18, and that was the only happy thing when she suffered social anxiety – moving away and living by yourself and having your own privacy. The bullies still haunt her to this day, and some of their worst bruisings are still visible on Vera’s body.

HABITS

Vera has a handful of habits. She bites her lip, digs her nails into her skin, holds her breath (for a bit too long) and her tail twitches. Usually, one or two of these habits occur when she’s nervous or particularly scared. The problem is, she’s usually scared and paranoid for most of the day, which makes every day a habit nightmare.

RELATIONSHIPS
Marsh
Marsh is Vera’s only friend after all those years, but Marsh means so much to her. The two are both shy and alone, and the two sympathize with each other a lot. Marsh is the only other plumerian Vera can talk to comfortably, without getting so extremely nervous or worked up. The two appreciate and love each other’s company, and can’t live as nicely without each other for support.

Farin
Vera has... a crush on Farin. She thinks he's very cute, especially his hair, but she doesn't have the courage to go and say a simple "hello" to him. She doesn't know if he has a mate or if he's single, but Vera swears that if she finds that out, she'll go and try to talk to him if he's single. It sounds a bit impossible, even to Vera, but Vera doesn't want her anxiety to ruin her love life, after what had happened to her before.

Their dream
Vera never really "had" a dream, she's always dreaming - dreaming of being able to talk to others "normally" again, dreaming of getting over her life-changing fear. Vera’s never tried to accomplish this impossible seeming dream, because she’s too afraid that she will mess up and have to start all over again. She’s always dreaming of feeling happy once more, and not having to feel a million shivers up your back to just open the door. It’s been so difficult for her, and all she wants is freedom and happiness. If Vera ever does reach her dream, who knows what she would be doing. For now, she’s always wondering and hoping if she will get there, but she never tries…
