Ianthe
name meaning;;
a Greek word meaning "violet flower", it was the name of an ocean nymph
in mythology. Ianthe hates when someone tries to call him "Ian" and insists
on "Ianthe", feminine as it may be.
gender;;
male (dfab, he/him pronouns)
favorite object;;
Ianthe's favorite object is a single, rather small, silver earring. As far as he knows it is
pure sterling silver though he has never much investigated the authenticity of the
metal. It's about the length of his paw pad and hangs from his right ear, about halfway
down. He has had it for so long he doesn't remember getting his ear pierced anymore,
and the jewelry has become something of an extension of himself. The earring is
a stingray, with it's 'wings' spread and its head down. It looks like it's hunting, or skimming
along the ocean floor. It's constantly cool to the touch as it hangs about an inch
from his ear. He likes the reassuring weight of it dangling. When he runs sometimes it nudges
up against the shell of his ear.
why;;
Ianthe's mother raised him by the sea. He doesn't remember much of his childhood, the memories faded by time and distance, but he does remember well the rub of salt in his fur and the bite of seawater against his toes. He remembers the way his mother would look out on the ocean with a painful wistfulness in her eyes that he was too young to understand. She left him very shortly after he was grown, disappeared between the span of one night and the next, but Ianthe doesn't blame her for it; her heart always belonged more to the sea than it did to him.
The earring was a gift from her, as much as he can figure. His earliest memory includes the weight of the earring, then quite substantial in comparison to the thin skin of his young ears. He remembers his mother pressing her nose against the earring and exhaling across his neck and making him promise to keep it safe no matter what. Ianthe doesn't know when he was given it or even who put it in; all he knows is that it is the last thing he has of his mother, and he intends to keep it safe.
Even as an adult Ianthe is constantly conscious of the earring. When he's involved in fights he is always careful to give his opponent his other ear and to keep the pierced one flattened along the curve of his skull. He has learned how to walk nearly silently for when he hunts occasionally the stingray bumps against his jaw and makes a slight metal noise; he now moves with incredible precision, and is able to hold his head perfectly still when he must. He spends a great deal of time at the ocean still but when he ventures inland he appreciates the earring all the more; it is an inescapable reminder of his mother and his childhood and his inherited affection for the sea.
