Fallon's heavy read cloak cascaded in velvety ripples from his shoulders and draped over his body, adding a thick layer of insulation to the creature's already luxuriously fluffy fur. The fabric was threadbare and hopelessly worn, but he found solace in its plush softness and in the memories it held. It helped keep him hidden from the beasts of the forest, too, and he thought this to be immensely comforting.

The moist swamp air clutched everything in its clammy grip, waves of stifling warmth pulsing through the trees, sending animals scurrying into their dens to smother themselves in cool soil. Even though midnight was swiftly approaching, and even as the pale moon hesitantly began to rise into the sky, the moist heat lingered.

Fallon felt the uncomfortable warmth as any other animal would, yet a hood remained tugged loosely over his head, and his crimson shawl stayed drooping over his lithe frame. His piercing scarlet eyes scanned the darkness as he trudged through the sopping dirt, recoiling slightly at the mud squishing under his paws. The marsh was his sworn enemy, a place he never dare set a foot in unless absolutely necessary. In all of his travels, even when he had to walk through a patch of swampy earth, he never had to spend the night, not like this.

The mire was supposed to be his true home, the place where his ancestors hunted and slept and lived, where they'd built their nests and collected shiny things to hoard, where they'd rejected the pleasantries of an easier lifestyle for their home, the swamp.
Fallon felt guilty for hating it so, but at the same moment, he knew that he wasn't at fault for the bitterness.
