in the depths of the woods, there is nothing to disturb the boundless beauty of the wilderness. trees stand sentinel over the dark loam, and dew gleams in the dells like a thousand shards of diamond. the canopy is thick enough that all beneath is tinted in the verdant tones of chlorophyll, but between the tightly woven boughs spurs godfingers in spears that spin gold between the shaded arbours. rays gather across a small stream that weaves amidst the growth, carried along with its harmonious murmur. soon enough, the water collects into a small pool, deep within the labyrinth of pan's garden. gleaming like a mirror, the water tempts from the trees many kinds of creature, all seeking to take their draught from this unquenchable source. amidst the tall harts and the lean hares, meanders a mare who wears shades of earth and bark, and who's eyes are rather like the water themselves. carefully, the equine paces her way to the shore, and strikes at the water in play. the other beasts, wary of her rife strength, retreat immediately and leave her to herself. she stands there for a while, and draws her fill from the cool depth of the pond. each mouthful is sweet and satisfactory, and a warmer breeze licks across her legs and plays with the length of the mare's cascading locks. satiated, she would raise her expressive features up towards the sun, now a golden orb looming only just above the trees. soon enough it will be night, and the travelling mare will need to find another place to take shelter.
on the timber structure of each limb, she ventures back amongst the wild trails of the forest, and follows the whispering wind. it guides her steadily, without reserve, to safety -- as it has done many times before. there, she finds herself in the vast swathes of a meadow. the grass there is crowned by pale masses of seeds that disturb with each step, and fly up in flocks of cotton-white before the breeze escorts them away and into the steadily darkening sky. beneath the newly emerged moon, the mare turns dark as fresh-ploughed soil, and her eyes are the brightest thing, save for a fire she sights down in the valley. knowing that the substance brings warmth, the wayfarer soon picks up speed. her thunderous hoof-falls dissolve distance in a rush of movement, and sod flies beneath her heels when she finally draws to a stop. the fire flickers close by now, and at her feet crouches a lithe, bird-boned figure. the woman looks up in surprise, and offers half an apple to the towering equine in supplication. soon enough, the mare is full of oats and hay, and has found herself a sheltered nook between the low, wooden forms of two caravans. she regards the sky once more, where stars peep over the eves at her, and sighs in satisfaction. she will no longer have need to wander on an empty stomach, or search diligently for water. the woman has promised her safety, shelter, companionship; they will roam together as comrades with their quaint little caravan and hearts full of adventures. with that final thought, she allows her eyes to drift closed, and dreams of the new life ahead of her.
