Why is this Viscet wearing a gas mask?:
(This is a long story. He gains the mask after it says Five Months Later if you would just like to read that, though it won't give all the details)
Nine years ago:
Booming noises echoed about the odd chamber and steam burst
from cracked spouts about him. An odd humming feeling gave the
air a life of its own, and made his bones feel as though they, too,
were humming. Green and yellow glowing liquid oozed from iron
bins and dripped from holes on the roof. Pothis paws caused the
thin metal grid beneath him to creak and moan as he cautiously
walked past the odd bins and pipes. Not long ago, he had seen
people swarming this area. Then, red and yellow lights began
flashing and everyone ran. Ever since then, no one seems to have
returned, which rightfully leaves it open to exploration. Now, he
was beginning to have second thoughts. Perhaps this wasn't such
a good idea. . .
The metal below him grew louder, and he lowered his head,
making a deep clicking nosie to sooth it, uncertain of why this
metal thing was making so much noise. After a moment, he pressed
onward, his pace broken by pauses and brief jogs when something
curious or startling appears. After some time, he found himself
standing in front of a door with an odd orange and black symbol
on it. Curious, he lightly nudged it, surprised that it was open,
and slipped in.
The room was dark with a cold draft coming in from an air duct at the center of the room. A desk sat solemnly in the right corner, the papers that once rested on it scattered and torn. A lamp lay on the ground, small fragments of glass littered about it like miniature diamonds. Light crept in through battered blinds and illuminated dust as it lazily drifted through the air. Pothi sneezed and shook briefly before entering, jumping as the door slowly closed behind him. The room was odd and smelt like stale berries, but there was a faint scent, one of meat. Quickly dismissing it as remnants of the humans scent, Pothi carried on with his investigation. He curiously nudged about papers until a burning scent of copper attacked his nose and he jerked his head back. He rubbed his muzzle with his forepaws, and eyed the source of the stench. All at once, his blood ran cold and his mane stood a little higher as he starred at a dark red elongated bear paw print. Memories rushed him all at once and he felt a splitting headache begin to grow as a mournful groan escaped him. Slowly, he backed up until he touched the door that sealed him in. He wanted out, he wanted to get away from the paw print, from the stench, from the memories. Panic flooded him and fear threw tears into his eyes. He turned and tried to nudge the door open, before attempting to leap up and snatch the door knob in vain. Pathetic whimpers escaped him as he scratched at the door, tears rushing down his cheeks now. "Help..." It was a squeak, barely audible to even him, but all that his throat could manage.
He stayed in that dreadful room for what felt like hours, his bones and muscles humming the whole time. Eventually, he heard something jingling with the door knob. Excitement brought him to his feet and he began stepping about in place, hoping to see an adult Viscet, here to take him back home. Though, what opened the door sent shivers down his spine instead.
Pothi gazed with wide eyes as the large brown muzzle forced the door open, nearly hitting him as it did. The massive body fell onto its forepaws heavily as the giant grizly sniffed the air fiercely. Pothi stumbled back, trying to remain silent but cringing as he stepped on the crinkling papers. The bears large head snapped to him, it's eyes pale with blindness but bloodthirsty just the same. After a few more sniffs, it reared up, it's head hitting the ceiling as it did so, and released a blood chilling roar. That was when he snapped. Every thought in Pothis mind vanished and he promptly switched to instinct and rushed past the bear, narrowly slipping past its broad legs. The grizly sensed him pass and turn, slamming its forepaws on the floor once more before rushing ahead. Pothi stumbled over is own legs in a desperate urge to speed up, fear and primitive instinct urging him onward. The bear thundered after him, beginning to loom over him as it advanced. Pothi squeaked as a massive paw hit him and sent him sprawling to the right. He collided with the railing heavily and flailed over the edge, his forepaws catching the grate and holding him over the edge. The bear approached, swinging its head side to side as it sniffed the air. The bears head snapped to him and it approached rapidly, it's teeth gleaming with saliva as it loomed over him. Pothi whimpered and released the edge of the grate, plumiting below into a bin filled with purple and orange glowing fluid.
Five Months Later
Pothi was found by seven humans during the draining of the bins. His flesh had merged with the radioactive goop, though its effects on others was lessened. Small wounds littered him along with a piece of twisted iron stuck in his side. Perhaps the worst of it all was his muzzle. The nose had been mostly eaten away along with the chops and tongue. Several teeth were mangled or missing and his lower jaw bone has twisted to where his mouth could no longer open properly without clicking and popping. Concerned about this young Viscet, scientist went to work promptly. In time, he returned to his old self, though his muzzle never did heal. When introduced to other viscets, they fled from him, uncertain of what he was. Determined to return him to a pack, scientist created a special mask for him. This mask not only protected him from judging glares, but purified the air he breathed. Along the sides of the mask, small holes remained opened to allow him to eat berries, nuts, and small pieces of meat.
Pothi was returned to a pack six years after the incident as a fairly healthy adult. After a few anxious moments, the pack accepted him cheerfully and the scientist celebrated their victory at the revival and return of a Viscet named Pothi.
