An icy breeze whipped the grass. Nova shot through the blades, the scampering mouse just inches infront of her. Higher up the hill her friend called to her, "You can do it Nova!" He said. Nova's eyes squinted to slits and she propelled forward. Her teeth sunk into the small creatures back. An outrageous cheer exploded from the snake behind her. "You did it Nova!" he called, racing to meet her and the limp mouse in her mouth. A small smile spread across her face. "I did. I knew I could and I did!" The looked the other snake in the eyes, her blue eyes sparkling like millions of stars. The two embraced in a hug. "lets go show your dad!" The two snakes bolted up the hill and out of sight.
The memory shimmered in Nova's brain. The same snake stood befor her, in the same mourning state she was in. His eyes were sullen, his stance was sulking. Her father had died. Though they were not siblings, this snake had loved her father as his own. Now he stood before her, feeling the same loss she did. Nova stared helplessly at him. She wanted to scream and cry. She wanted to run away and never look back, but she knew he needed her more than ever, as did she. Her blue scales shimmered in the dying sunlight as her and her friend left the burial sight.
Three weeks after her fathers death she stood with him once again, on the hillside. They overlooked the grassland where she had once caught her first mouse and bolted back to her father. Now there was no father to return to. It was just her and him, alone in the dark world before them. "Nova." He said quietly. He must have been thinking about her father too, because she saw tears spring in his eyes. "Yeah?" She replied in the same tone. His eyes sunk sadly to the earthy soil beneath her. "I know now isn't really the time.. And I know your still mourning- I am too. I most definetly still am. But... I've just been wanting to tell you, that I, uh, I really like you. A lot. I mean, I guess you could say... I love you?" Nova looked at him blankly. When she didn't respnond he said, "I mean, love is a strong word, and its much to comonly used, but it is an easy way to express ones feelinds-" "Its okay Alex. I like you too." She said with a small laugh. "Oh... You do? I mean, I thought you'd feel-" She interupeted him with a hug. A delighted laugh escaped him.
Nova stared at her husband. One year ago they professed their love for eachother. One month ago they had gotten married, connected by an internal bond. They would love eachother wether in sickness or in health, in life or in death. She loved Alex with all of her heart. She always had, she just had never realized the burning sensation inside her was love. Alex entered the house with their lunch in his hand. His voice wavered as he said, "We are in danger. Flocks of hawks and all sorts of birds are moving here. We must leave." Nova looked at him, a startled look on her face. "Now? We can leave now!" Alex shook his head. "We must." Nova slithered forward. "Promise me, if anything happens to us, you'll wait for me. When you get to, wherever you go when you die, you'll wait for me?" Alex said, a hopless look in his eyes. "I promise" Nova said. They kissed eachother desparatly, for they knew this could be the last time.
An hour later Alex peeked his head outside their home. His head swivled back and forth. Seeing nothing he nodded to Nova. The two darted from their home and along the empty desert. It didn't take long for the birds to find them. They were quite easy targets on the pale yellow sand. The peircing caw of an eagle sounded over head. The shadow of the bird darkened the ground around them. Nova and Alex locked gazes, and she knew what she had to do.
"Will you take Alex to be your lawfully wedded husband, your partner in life and your one true love? Will you hold his friendship and his love today, tomorrow and forever? Will you trust and honor him, laugh with him and cry with him? Will you give your life, you heart, and your soul to him and only him? Will you save him when death knocks at his door, even when it is at the cost of your own life? Will you be faithful through good times and bad, in sickness and in health as long as you both shall live?"
The words ring in her ears.
"I do."
rattling harder and harder in her mind, the words embed themselves in her brain. The caws over head are closer, closer, closer. The shadow of the eagle above them moves, it is diving. At the last second Nova leaped ontop of Alex. The eagles clawd wrapped around her tightly. They rose, farther and farther away from Alex who scrambled about helplessly on the floor, screaming for all he was worth. Nova stared at him, her eyes filling with tears. She refused to let them fall. She wiggled out from the eagles grasp just enough so she could wrap herself around its throat. She pulled tighter and tighter. She knew the eagle would go back for Alex. She had to save him. The eagle struggled to regain breath, but it was too late. Wind stabbed at Nova's scales as she fell. She dangled loosley from the dead eagles throat. As soon as she hit the ground her world was black.
Through the darkness Nova saw a light. A great, big, blinding light. She moved to it. The closer she got, the more of the lights image she saw, until she saw it was not, in fact, a light, but a snake. Nova looked at the snake and opened her mouth to ask, "Am I alive?" but the snake shook its head, "no" before she could even speak.
The glowing snake had explained to Nova her situation. Yes, she was dead. She could choose any form she wanted to be in. Nova had choosen to stay a PPS forever. Her younger years were her best. She had caught her first mouse, met Alex, and her father was alive. Nova only wanted happy memories now. The snake told her she was to live amoung the stars and forever watchover the world she knew and loved. So there she stayed, watching over her world.
Alex slithered slowly up the mountain. The world around him was dark. The moon was dull. The wind snapped at his face, pushing him down. He continued up the mountain. Rain pelted him all over like rocks. He reached the top. Lighting cracked across the sky. He looked up into the night sky, anger flaring inside his stomach. "YOU PROMISED YOU'D WAIT FOR ME!" He called, but his voice was stolen away into the wind. "YOU PROMISED!" He called out again. "You promised!" He yelled, but quieter. He was finally broken. Tears streamed down him scaly face, and his body convulsed as he sobbed. "You promised." it was nothing more than a whisper. The wind suddenly softened. The rain slowly came to a hault. Alex looked up into the stars. The wind tickled his ears. The stars began to glow brighter, until they almost made the mishapen silhouette of a snake. "I will always wait for you." the wind whispered in his ears. "Always." And then it was gone. Alex stood with his mouth agape as the sun began to rise, and the moon began to set. No words slipped out of his mouth. None were needed. He simply took it all in.
