goddess of fire, of war, of vengeance and of medicine -- Mistress of Dread, The Lady of Slaughter
username; iBrevity
show name; Before Whom Evil Trembles
name; Sekhmet meaning:
Sekhmet was an Egyptian goddess renowned for her ferocity on and off
the battlefield. She was usually depicted as a lioness and associated with the sun and flame. She was known
as the protector of the pharoah and prayed to before major battles; it was through her blessing that wars
were won. But despite her reputation Sekhmet was also a goddess of healing and medicine, of protecting
those who were weak and helpless.
gender; female
halter color; gleaming gold
story;
“Go quiet,” the boy whispered, gripping his rope tighter. “Don't spook her.”
His partner nodded once and got down on his knees to make his approach. Some feet away stood a horse, her light belly identifying her, her head low. It was unclear if she was grazing or sleeping; but her ears were still and her eyes were closed, and so the teenagers felt safe to sneak closer.
The boy who had spoken first tripped over a knot of weeds and went down hard. The other crawled back to him and after a quick analysis he whispered, “We gotta leave. You're real hurt.”
The younger bit his lip but before he could speak his face went white; and his brother did not even see Sekhmet lifting her head behind him, her progress silent on the blanket of flattened grass, her ears pinned back and lost among the mess of her mane.
“W-Wayne—” the boy said and Sekhmet reared, her hooves nearly scraping the elder's head, tossing her head back to scream. They fled her pasture half-falling on one another. She chased them to the far fence and then watched them run, restlessly prowling at the gate, her eyes flashing in the moonlight.
It was some days later when a stablehand finally crept back in to feed her.
---
Sekhmet's life went on in the same way for years. She was too violent for the employees to approach her and sequestered away from the other horses, left in a field gone half-wild, her mane and tail tangled and thick with ornaments of debris.
It was only when she was nearly seven that a big group of men came to her pasture and crowded her into the corner and eventually got a halter around her head—and they got her into a horse trailer then, half-pushing her up the ramp. She kicked dents into the metal walls and screamed her frustration but the drive was long and her energy waned; when the truck stopped she stood in the back quiet, head low, breathing hard through her nose.
They led her to a pasture much different than her own and let her go. Eventually other horses meandered over, unafraid of her, calling out greetings and names. Sekhmet had not spoken to another in nearly three years and conversation came unsteadily to her, but the horses persisted, and before long she was warily following a mare named Fox into their stables.
She was not approached with saddle nor reins. The stablehands left her well enough alone; in time she learned that she could approach them if she wished to have her coat groomed or her mane braided. Although she did not lose the fearsome gleam to her eyes her cruelty faded. She believed these other horses were hers now, hers to watch over and safeguard from cruelty. A year after she arrived she allowed a young ranch hand to put another halter on her, this one gold; and it was perfect, and Sekhmet regretted nothing.

story: 341 words
Pristine white sand surrounded him, crystal clear waters crashed down in front of him, and the palms swayed in the slight breeze coming off the ocean. The colt glanced around, enjoying his surroundings, before fixing his beautiful green eyes on the sailing ship to his left. It wasn't much, really, just a simple wooden boat that resembled a pirate ship. But he loved it. He loved walking the gangplank up onto the deck, standing there as the boat swayed underneath his hooves, his owner there to steady him when his balance failed him and he swayed to the side. The boat was his home, the island just a port to stay at while it was getting fixed and cleaned and prettied up. Excitedly he trotted over to the shoreline, whinnying to his owner to hurry up! She laughed and spun the wheel, turning the boat to the small dock where he would finally get on his ship! He tossed his head and pranced a bit, excited, before cantering as fast as he could to the wooden dock, racing the ship as the waves crashed on his side, and suddenly the water was more than just a spray, it was surrounding him, pulling him out, his body tumbling in the current as he struggled to keep his head above water. Instinct was what saved him as he wildly thrashed his legs and tossed his head into the sky, getting a gulp of air before going under once more, finally finding a rhythm as he kicked his long legs to stay afloat. His green eyes were wild as he frantically looked around, and all he saw was water, what he once thought to be peaceful and pristine, now making him fight for his life. The water surrounded him, it was everywhere, and then down splashed his owner from the boat! "Quiet now, my little Sailor, I've got you. You've scared momma right out of her mind, you troublesome little thing! Come on now, back on board your ship, little King of The Seas."

congrats, Vinson! I really loved your story. c:

Suzzallo KennelsYou do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
