"i- penny!" an older xholi called out, worry etched on her features, along with frustration. "my name isnt penny! thats a dumb girls name," the pup huffed, hiding. "im penumbra, why cant you remember that?" rolling her eyes, the elder stood and walked over to the younger being, expression softening upon seeing their puffed cheeks and pouty lips. "penny is shorter than penumbra," she cooed. they sighed loudly.

being as gorgeous as he was, penumbra grew up with a noble heart. he stood tall and proud, swearing his loyalty to his leader. standing outside countless nights, sharp emerald green eyes catching anything and everything. he gave off a cold vibe, slick and dangerous, one who would surely get you into trouble. a frown carved into his face, answers always clipped. and yet, his only wish was for no one to break him.

it was a cool day, he remembered, when she confessed what she saw. he had let his guard down, something he had sworn to never do. but she had broken down his barriers, stole his heart and took it away to her own. she stood before him, tears streaming down her face, "ive seen through the cracks," she whispered, lips trembling. "youre a monster. you dont love anybody except your job. your stupid, stupid job." her voice raised violently, she slammed herself into him and ran away, "why didnt i see sooner?" he listened, remembering the last words she ever said to him. and for the first time, he cried.

What you're running from, you aren't certain, but you know that it's going to catch up to you at this rate. Your heart pounds and your breath comes ragged. You can't see anymore - or maybe you can, but everything is black. Suddenly, you trip on something. As you tumble, you catch sight of it: a small, writhing fish, that has what looks like black water seeping from its jaw, and...

You awake in a panicked cold sweat. Whilst you're aware that it had just simply been another nightmare, you can't quite calm your trembling form and your heart is still fluttering in your chest. You're more than used to the night terrors by now, the kind that keeps you up and makes the thought of sleep itself uncomfortable. You look around the den, and everyone else is still sleeping, safe and calm. There is nothing to fear. Prey has been good and everyone's coats have a soft sheen in the dim light. A flopping fish will do you no harm. "It's okay." You breathe shakily, as you rest your head back down.

As you sit solemnly at a border, keeping quiet watch over anything and everything that moves, you scent a packmate. You cannot see them yet over the uneven ground, but you know that a hunter is making their rounds.

When they come into view, you can't help but notice the fish that they're carrying appears to still be moving. Of course, it must just be your eyes playing tricks on you - what point would there be in carrying a live fish? But as they come closer you can't shake the sense that something's not quite right. You look away and prick your ears again, surveying your surroundings once more. Distraction is not good for a sentinel.
But when they creep back into your field of vision, your heart skips; you see that the fish is oozing black from it's jaw, and it looks like it might fall onto the floor at the hunter's paws at any second. You whip your body around and give chase. You have to warn them. They look bewildered as you come stumbling to a halt in front of them and start spitting noises and gesturing at the decrepit creature, before you realise.
Between the fish's jaws is a straggly piece of damp seaweed, that looks almost black in the dim light. Suddenly conscious of your bristling form, you give an apologetic glance as the hunter looks disdainfully at you; you are not supposed to leave your post.
You return to it with a bow of your head, but your mind is still racing.

Your nightmares, of course, are not real. But the panic and paranoia, messing with your job, definitely are.
