RESEARCH

cryophobia: housing is clean, warm, well ventilated, and free from drafts.
remove low-hanging lights, nails sticking out, toxic cleaning substances.
sealed stable doors.
riding, etc. in heated indoor arena.
sweet iron bit: stays warmer than regular bits.
clean hooves regularily. add layer of non-stick cooking spray or petroleum jelly to your horse's hooves. keeps snow and ice balls from forming in hooves.
groom to warm up muscles.
exercise sheet to keep muscles from becoming cold while riding, etc.
cool down horse properly. will get very cold from being hot and sweating while riding, etc. to being standing still.
room temperature water, not cold.

fear of dogs: get your horse to be trusting of you.
develope horse's self confidence by lunging with longer leads than normal.
find a small, sweet, shy, calm dog to slowly introduce through barriers.
ask a friend to walk the dog in large circles, and follow slowly from as far behind as necessary until horse feels safe.
repetition is important for building confidence, repeat for several days.
play with horse while friend walks dog in big circles around arena.
do things [jumping jacks, windmills, etc.] to make your horse less reactive in general. allow horse to move away from you slightly if needed.
when walking near a dog, distract horse, and soon horse will focus on you instead of dogs.

escaping: install higher fences around his pasture.
periodically walk around pasture checking for loose boards.
make pasture a quiet, safe, dry place to delete motives.
high quality living space, no undesirable qualities.
no wildlife distractions to lure him out.
keep a supply of food and water in paddock.
keep other horses in the paddock so your horse has company.

storm becomes heavier and his dam attempts to shelter him.

How will you deal with his cryophobia?: Since Ironwood is located within the Rocky Mountain Range of Alberta, he will have to over come his fear as eventually it will get cold, and there will be snow. However we aren't just gonna shove him into the could right away, that is just cruel. Instead Darren is going to have the heated blanket that we keep at the stables for older horses, he is going to get this as his first stepping stone to recovery. By ensuring that he never feels extreme colds, only cools for the first winter since his accident, we are telling him that this is a safe environment. However after December the heated blanket will slowly be turned down, which will help him to get used to and adjust to the temperature, the blanket will eventually give off the placebo affect because it will help his believe that he is being kept warm while in fact the blanket is turned off and he is merely generating his own heat.
How will you rehabilitate him?: the snow portion of his rehabilitation is going to be the hardest because it is extremely hard to replicate it in the middle of a 30 degree summer. So we will have to make do with fake snow for the summer, and help Darren get used to being surrounded by white stuff, so that by the time real snow does show up, his brain will associate it with the summer and not his traumatic experience.

Personality: Jinx is very intelligent yet unimaginative and
he overthinks things more often than not. Though obedient and even
submissive by nature he is also quite wary and reluctant. Jinx doesn't
actively search for friendship as he normally prefers his own company,
but when he puts his heart into something he can be wonderfully kind
and sweet. He makes unintentional friends with those who appreciate
his small, yet metaphorically huge acts of compassion. He keeps quiet
about his problems and is quite the pessimist, assuming the worst and
missing out on the positives.

How will you deal with his cryophobia?: Jinx will have all the blankets
and rugs he needs, and he can stay in the inside stalls if he wants. He'll
get a hot mash with molasses at night, to put him into a sweet warm
sleep, mmm...

How will you rehabilitate him?: We'll give him all the love he can get,
but we will also give him loads of enrichment through training and
interactive games to help keep his active mind occupied.

How will you stop him trying to escape?: We hope Jinx will not want
to escape when he meets the other horses and staff, and sees how
lovely they all are. Just in case though we have a double fence with
a metre wide hedge.

How will you deal with his cryophobia?:
well in the mile high state where our barn is, we have a very large heated barn, however most of our horses are not blanketted, however at the moment Rio is small enough that he sleeps in the attched garage with many blankets and heaters, it took a while but i convinced my partner to take the car to a storage place and we had nothing else in the garage. once he gets older we will move him outside and blanket him.

How will you rehabilitate him?:
(entry one month after getting him)
well one of my horses (rio) was small for his age and then ran into a fence after a lot of time at the vet we were able to get him back to our barn. the only thing is our dogs, we love 'em and they are very friendly but Rio will have none of it, so the dogs are not allowed into his stall and he allowed to go back there anytime, we leave it open for him. we have a bunch of swat and antibiotics on hand for his wounds, the doctor said he will only have mild scarring. We will have to give him extra grain and oats in the winter beacuse he is so small and gets picked on often, so we are seperating him for a bit and putting him with a mare who is very good with all the horses as a motherly figure. We got some sunscreen from the store as it is mid summer we need his skin to heal a bit. The vet says that in two or more years his bald patches will be mainly covered and we only need sunscreen for a year or so.

Rio is now the heard leader and even after all he has been through he is doing very well, he is still scared of the cold and we have an extra heater in the barn for the winter.



Rio is very mischevious but a wonderful leader, he has tried to escape however instead of letting him pick at the locks we teach him tricks such as soccer and bucket flipping, he can also carry a bucket of toys to his heard.


(based on a true story about my real horse Rio, he was used for horse tripping,(he was the horse being tripped) then he was house with a goat and he still has scars from that, he is now fully trained and has the same personality as the one listed,he also can escape however we trained that out of him by teaching him to use his tricks for good (see ton of tricks for resemblance) instead of picking locks he plays soccer (dont know if this is considered similar) the real rio has the same bald patches (not sure if they used sunscreen or not, he doesn't need it now, and the bald patches if you were wondering is beacuse of all of the goat's head butting ))
