Story
- Victor stood at the mouth of a cave, peering in . The world around him was misty with morning fog, the morning's light casting an eerie shine on everything . The deer had an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach, his hair cut short and in a disarray . His fur was coated in sweat and mud, a few twigs were snagged in his cotton-like, black hair and barbs were matted into his velvety coat . An eerily familiar crimson liquid dripped from his equally red antlers . The buck was a mess . It looked like he had been running for days as he huffed, his head was hung low to the ground and his leg quivered under his weight . His bones showed through his skin and he looked malnourished . What was once a beautiful prized buck was not nothing but a heap of skin and bones . The buck stood there for what seemed like forever, finally getting a chance to catch his breath . His ear swiveled back and perked up at the sound of broken twigs snapping behind him . The monster that had been hunting him had caught up .
Victor pushed off on his wobbly legs and bound off into the twisting cave, his cloven hooves clacking on the hard rock . Every few steps he wound trip and catch himself or fall and have to scramble back up . The sound of another pair of hooves followed behind him, his pursuer never letting up, barely breaking a sweat in this game of cat and mouse whilst Victor did his best to stay ahead and not fall behind, least he fall back into the grip of the monster behind him . Water occasionally dripped onto the deer's head as he sprinted through the cave . He soon came to a halt though, faced with a bigger challenge than before . He stared at the dead end, there were no tunnels that lead somewhere else, no hiding places, and no way to escape the inevitable . With heavy breath the buck turned around, a single shadow danced along the wall, although there was no light in the cave he could somehow see everything as if a fire were giving off it's brilliantly orange light nearby . Although there was one thing, the shadow was not his, but in a way it was . Standing just a few yards in front of him was a buck, identical to him in every way minus the fact that it was fit as a fiddle . His world then began to melt away, the rock walls slowly dripping down on his head and the floor soon becoming a pool of gray ooze . He and his doppelganger were left, struggling to keep their heads' above the melting world . Victor was losing the fight, sinking more and more with every kick to try and stay up . Just before his head was fully submerged the other version of himself whispered "This is who you are .." Victor's world then went black at the ooze covered his head .

Day had rolled around and Victoria was still hanging near the river . She watched as the forest animals came and went to get a drink or to cool off in the water . It was the middle of June, the temperatures were high and the sun was bright . This was her least favorite kind of weather . Not because it was cheery, but for the fact that it was her mothers favorite . The doe couldn't stand anything that her mother had liked . It used to be different though, the two used to share all of their interests and dislikes . Although when the older deer had passed Victoria just couldn't bring herself to like anything that she had used to adore . The image of her mother's last few moments always sat in the back of her mind .
- A dusty black doe lied down in a patch of moss, silver dusting her fur giving her an old and fragile look to her . A young buck stood about the doe, tears brimming his eyes . Crimson red antlers sprouted from his head, they were the only difference between the two deer . The buck watch as his mother whisper insanity to herself, slowly growing quieter . The old doe had gone mad in her old age . Her thoughts were not hers anymore, but belonged to something else inside of her . The young buck stared down at his mother, tears now streaming down his face . He knew that she wasn't going to stay awake for another day . Soon she would fall into the cold, deep sleep that she had been murmuring about for days before this night . He didn't want to believe it, he wanted her to be healthy again, to not say the wild things she now ranted about, he wanted his mother back . But as the old doe closed her eyes and her breath stilled he knew it would never happen and that he lost the only one that had stayed in his life . With one last look at the darkly colored doe he turned and sulked away without a sound .
The doe shook her head and shook the memories from her reach . This was not the time to be mourning, it had been far to long since her mother had passed for her to still be thinking about it . Victoria turned and walked away from the river, it was far to hot to be standing in the sunny spot . She headed back toward the shady forest, light filtered through the leaves and speckled her back . The tree limbs hung low, only a few inches higher than the crimson colored antlers that were settled upon the doe's head . She held her head high to prevent her braids from collecting dirt and the like . As she trotted along she forgot all about the reoccurring nightmares and memories .
When the doe had finally cleared her head of all of her thoughts she realized that she was in one of the many small clearings the were nestled into the woods . Her ruby red eyes landed on a human girl, one with jet black hair and a pair or eyes that matched her own . The human resembled her mother in every way . The girl reached out towards her, her ghostly white hand was facing up, palm against the sky . She looked inviting and gentle. The human was speaking in a language that Victoria did not understand, but the words were strangely comforting . The human's voice was soft and gently . The doe felt no need to fear the human girl . Closing the space between her and the girl, Victoria pushed her nose into the human's hand . She could almost physically feel a bond between the girl and herself form right then and there . In that moment Victoria had found someone to fill the spot in her heart that was left hollow when her mother had passed .

It had been a few months since Victoria has first met the human girl . The two had shared many secrets with each other and knew everything about one another, or at least the doe had liked to think that way . Victoria still didn't understand what the girl would say but did know some basic things, like "stay" and "calm down" . Although she could just feel when the girl was telling her something important, something that she didn't want anyone else to know . And the doe didn't know how to explain the feeling . But she felt that she would have to protect the girl's words, even if she did not understand . Victoria had found that the girl was the mirror image of her mother . She moved in the same graceful way and spoke in the same soft tone of voice . The girl even had the same cheery look in her eyes .
It was the middle of winter, and a thick blanket of snow coated the ground . The human talked endlessly as the doe listened . They were the perfect image of friends, even without being able to understand each other through words they knew each other physically and emotionally .
The girl then stopped and turned to face the doe saying something before turning and walking away . Victoria had soon learned a while back that the girl was telling her that they should head back . She always said the same thing in the same voice before heading back home, so Victoria learned what she was saying every time they were to leave the forest . The doe followed behind the girl before walking beside her again .
A loud earsplitting boom was then heard, leaving the doe's ears ringing and her head hurting . She instantly skittered out of the way and basically flew across the forest floor . Once she had sailed a couple hundred feet the doe slowed and turned, in hopes that her human had followed . To her angst she hadn't . The girl was nowhere to be seen . Victoria panicked as her eyes frantically searched the snow . A human she didn't recognize came into view . He was talking in a panicked fashion, his voice was booming and was too loud . But even with how loud he was Victoria strangely couldn't hear him . Her entire world was silent as her eyes landed on the growing red patch of snow .
The doe pushed pass the hunter, who quickly moved back and away from the wild animal . Victoria looked down at the girl, her face was much paler, as she looked like a ghost now . Her crimson eyes that had once matched Victoria's perfectly were now a dull burgundy . The doe lowered her head and nudged the human's cheek . A hand gently touched the fur on her cheek, although it didn't hold the warmth that it had just mere minutes before . The girls side was stained in a red ooze . Victoria's stomach twisted in a familiar way . She hadn't felt like this in years . But here she was, reliving her past . Her only friend, the one that held her heart was now fading . Her eyes filled with tears that fell onto her human's cheeks .
The girl's hand fell from Victoria's cheek and the doe panicked . She let out a strangled bugle, her heart in her throat . The sound was long and low, echoing throughout the forest . It was eerily beautiful but sad at the same time . The doe's world had stopped . She had lost her only friend, the one that was there when her mother couldn't be . Now her human wasn't hers anymore, and she wasn't her human's . The doe looked over and stared at the hunter, who seemed just as panicked as she was . With that Victoria took off into the forest, disappearing into the trees and out of sight as snow began to fall . She fled as red and blue light flashed in the distance and sirens screamed .
